VΓ€inΓ€mΓΆinen carves the first kantele from the jaw of a giant pike. Illustration by Pasi Leinonen.
The greatest hero in Finnish folklore is VΓ€inΓ€mΓΆinen, a mighty warrior, shaman, and musician with a magical voice. He once slew a giant pike and made the first kantele (a traditional Finnish plucked-string instrument) from the pike's jaw and a young lady's hair.
