They called her bonne femme when they needed her, far, far worse things when they thought they didn't... and then, there was her goat.

Our 11th #darkspringtime story is a witchy tale from Burgundy on the brink of the Great Revolution - read it below.

This is the world’s only fictitious travelogue through the Nordic countries that features plagiarizing warrior-poets, beer-brewing draugar, Dalecarlian horse-toy cavalries, enslaved leprechauns, and family feuds that end in the violent razing of a Norwegian dollhouse.

Skellig Michael, off Ireland’s County Kerry coast, holds a 6th-century monastic settlement perched above the sea. Visitors climb 600 steep steps to reach ancient beehive huts. Today the island is also known for puffins and its role in 'Star Wars'. #WyrdWednesday

…though no actual physical altercations. We can thank Ib Spang Olsen for this illuminating illustration that appears in Ole Rustrup’s classic Danish book of Norse myths.

After a long journey atop her swine-powered mode of transportation, Freyja finally arrives at the decrepit cave-home of the unfriendly giantess, Hyndla. As with most divine visits to the giants, this one also ends in insults and threats…

The world’s only Norse mythology-based parody of a Penguin Classic: because everyone deserves to learn about Odin and Thor from a drunkard with a heavy Boston accent (although a standard English language version also exists).

’Tis a beauty!

This is a book all about Gamla Uppsala from the Vendel Period up through the post-conversion medieval era. Easy to read and easy on the eyes but only available in Swedish since that’s just how it is.

VΓ€inΓ€mΓΆinen carves the first kantele from the jaw of a giant pike. Illustration by Pasi Leinonen.

The greatest hero in Finnish folklore is VΓ€inΓ€mΓΆinen, a mighty warrior, shaman, and musician with a magical voice. He once slew a giant pike and made the first kantele (a traditional Finnish plucked-string instrument) from the pike's jaw and a young lady's hair.

Wyrdlings!

Some things are set in stone. Or wood. Or bone. You name it, since this week:

"Carvings, Inscriptions & Writings on the Wall"

is our #WyrdWednesday topic – so, tell us tales of wyrd bas-reliefs, strange runes on artefacts and otherworldy hieroglyphs found in deep dungeons!
