Press release - Government faces legal challenge on £90 million subsidy for cheap sugar - Foodrise The government is being forced to defend a new trade measure which will flood the country with cheap sugar – using taxpayers’ money to undermine its commitments on climate and public health. Legal pro...

It is astonishing that the government has introduced this trade measure allowing tariff-free sugar imports. This trade deal is detrimental to public and environmental health and uses taxpayer money to undermine both.

The environmental devastation, animal welfare and health harms driven by industrial meat production are no longer up for debate. So why does the EU continue to prop up this backwards industry? It’s time for policymakers to make better, bolder decisions on food and farming.

👀 Fascinating new @foodrise.bsky.social blog - with the Autumn Budget quietly boosting the UK's access to cheap sugar, its become clear that if we're serious about protecting health then trade and public health policies must better align - rather than contradict.

Britain’s largest salmon farm has just been approved in Shetland - which would contain up to 6,000 tonnes of salmon at any one time.

This is a shocking decision that puts corporate profit above all else: animals welfare, local ecosystems and communities.

The autumn budget saw a trade measure renewed that allows raw cane sugar to be imported into the UK tariff-free.

Ali Hines @foodrise.bsky.social spotlights how this move contradicts the government’s strengthening of the soft drinks industry levy and detriments the environment and public health.

Land-based salmon farming isn’t the future, it’s factory farming underwater. A dystopian, resource-hungry experiment that’s already failing around the world.

Here’s why it must be stopped before it takes hold: foodrise.org.uk/fish-out-of-...

Salmon farming is moving onto land – and it's a disaster.

Our new guest blog for the Green Alliance explains why land-based salmon farming brings a new wave of environmental harm and animal suffering.

The expansion of land-based facilities will only deepen salmon production’s existing impacts, driving demand for wild-caught fish for feed and triggering other harms on the environment, wildlife, animal welfare and communities.

Illustration of salmon inside big crammed fish tank. Text: The reality behind the tanks: Barren, overcrowded tanks. Mass die-offs. Huge energy and water use.

Land-based salmon farming is an environmental and ethical disaster:
⚠️ Drains the ocean of wild fish, stolen from coastal communities for salmon feed
⚠️ Devours water and energy
⚠️ Risky tech with frequent failures, pollution, mass die-offs
⚠️ Causes suffering on an industrial scale

What is land-based salmon? It’s industrial fish farming in tanks.

Salmon – born to swim through rivers and seas – are now crammed into sterile tanks under artificial lights inside factories.

From wild rivers to prison tanks. It’s absurd and cruel. (2/5)
