Number of metal bands per 100,000 in Canada (2025 data)
Tempting...
The good news is I think my code finally works better and I've cut out the worst corner cases
The bad news is I'm still seeing a lot of false alarms due to old data and dubious database entries
Now I just have to verify 400+ bands by hand π
Ok, I may be getting closer to a better answer for bands with no original members left
Or at least those that I can find algorithmically
Now to actually put some effort into verifying the result
And another one! This guy both was on his first release and wasn't. I guess I can't trust artist's manually entered role specific timelines?

I was trying to avoid using the lineup on first release because of some of them having no data. Instead compared year of first release and listed start year. I might have to sift it by hand π
Oh geeze, on top code bugs, it looks like there are straight up database errors too.
This guy is listed as a member on a first release playing drums, but then is listed as having started later?

I have to apologize. My last post on bands with no original members was erroneous. I thought I had weeded out the corner cases and my initial spot checks looked right, but going back through it there are more errors than I'm comfortable with.
We'll see if I can get something more accurate...
32 covers of Zombie!

He's a band on metal archives
However, I see that this inclusion is an error. My calc has a little trouble with members that have multiple roles with no timelines. He's got one role with a timeline, obviously the rest have been from the start.

Tried Veilburner? Never could latch onto Portal.
I feel like market saturation and the rise in streaming are to blame. The incentive to innovate just isn't there and things are getting washed out by the shear numbers of things
Everything everywhere is just scams now or becoming so.
Anaal Nathrakh. I treasure almost every song
Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who considers this a favorite

A scatter plot showing metal vs. non-Metal bands per capita over the world. There is a strong correlation showing if a country makes a lot of metal bands per capita, they'll make a lot of music in general too.
It's not just metal!

A reasonable argument for which I have no final opinion. However, my bigger question is would you include the album in a ranking of Slayer albums, or dismiss it as separate because it's a cover album?
Yes and no. Songs written by Hanneman, but from his previous band Pap Smear. Considered covers on MA as well.

Is a Single that's over 3.5 hours long with 17 tracks really a single?
Huh, almost 600 1 track albums over on metal archives.
Have you done wacky concert experiences?
Follow up question - What percentage of an album needs to be covers before it's a "cover album"?
Motorhead's 1st is half covers, but I doubt anyone would call it that. So, what's the cutoff?
If it's a classical work, is it ever considered a cover?
