On this day in 1937, ex-Red, #AstonVilla #WWFC & England International Tom 'Pongo' Waring wrote about his time at #BarnsleyFC, the FA Cup run in '35/36 & advised youngsters to follow a regular job rather than football. He also mentions leaving BFC - I thought he wanted to leave but it seems not.

Otd in 1923, Barnsley beat South Shields 5-0 at Oakwell. Joe Halliwell scored a hat-trick, Russell Wainscoat & Ernest Hine also scored. It was Halliwell's 4th hat-trick for the Reds. On this day in 1963, in just the third game of the year so far because of the harsh winter, Barnsley were leading 1-0 in the Division 3 match at Watford when it was abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch. It was played again 3 days later when it ended in a 0-0 draw. #BarnsleyFC #WatfordFC

Otd in 1913, Barnsley beat Leicester Fosse 1-0 at Oakwell in Div 2, George Utley the scorer. Full-back & captain, including in the FA Cup Final, Archie Taylor suffered a knee injury & never played for the Reds again & moving to York in May 2014. He made 72 appearances. #BarnsleyFC #ArchieTaylor

Russell Wainscoat - scored a hat-trick on his debut for Barnsley on this day in 1920.
Otd in 1920, having signed from Maltby Main Colliery FC 2 days before, Russell Wainscoat made his debut for Barnsley & scored a hat-trick in a 4-1 home win V Fulham. He also won a penalty which Jack Gittins scored. He remains the only Barnsley player to score 3 debut. #BarnsleyFC #RussellWainscoat

Otd in 1952, Barnsley lost 1-0 v Leeds United at Elland Road in Div 2. Full-back Gordon Pallister made his last appearance for the Reds before retiring, unable to recover from a slipped disc. He made 277 apps in total, all but the first 10 in Div 2 & later became a club director. #BarnsleyFC

Otd in 1981, Stewart Barrowclough returned to Barnsley after a gap of 11 years. Barrowclough made his debut as an 18 year-old in 1970 before moving to Newcastle United. He stayed at Newcastle until 1978, moved to Birmingham City & then Bristol Rovers before moving back to Oakwell. #BarnsleyFC
