New work led by our PhD student Xinyue Zhang shows that identifying dryland degradation is sensitive to the rainfall dataset and the resolution of the vegetation dataset chosen - so consider these datasets carefully π§ͺ

This work (led by our PhD student Aditya Deshmukh) shows that if a series of recent extreme East Coast Lows (off Australia's east coast) were to occur in a warmer climate they would not produce higher peak wave heights - good news for the region agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...
Did you miss the Jan. 31 deadline for the ECR competition at the 2026 Pan-GLASS Conference?
Good news: entries are now accepted until 16 Feb. 2026. Submit your application and secure your spot at this one of a kind Conference.

Some good news in the transition away from fossil fuels
I'm very happy to see this study, led by Moutassem El Rafei, of the generation of extreme wind gusts published. Model resolution of ~200m is needed to capture this phenomena agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.... @andrewb31.bsky.social
Not Prof, I meant proud.
I'm Prof to have played a small part in writing this book. A great resource for anyone interested in the Southern hemisphere. Congrats to Andrea and team
This is some very nice work by our PhD student Alex (Ying Lung)
For day 7 of our #PLOSClimateCountdown, check out this 'behind the paper' blog post in which we learn more about research by Nic Badullovich and colleagues:
"Behind the paper: the role of museums in engaging the public on climate change"

It's great to be part of this historic event. This is just the start of the process to produce the next round of assessment reports to guide action on climate change.

Open Call: Event Attribution Working Group
WCRPβs Global Extremes Platform (GEP) is looking for new members for its Working Group on Event Attribution. This group helps shape how we understand the role of climate change in extreme events.

I'm happy to represent GEWEX and CORDEX at the Pan-CLIVAR meeting. Lots of great ocean related research happening in this community!
We just published a paper that shows including lateral flow of soil moisture matters for climate once you get down to km-scale modelling of the land surface. More and more of our work is at these scales so we need to start including processes like this. π§ͺ

Next up, David Bee Olmedo from @nsw-bnhrc.bsky.social and @ccrc.bsky.social discusses scaling of extreme rainfall with temperature calculated using radar data.
Greeshma Surendran from @ccrc.bsky.social uses pseudo-global warming models to look at changes in extreme wind gusts.
