NEW FROM ME:
While US and Israeli forces launched strikes against Iran this weekend, Global News' The West Block host Ben Mulroney reposted video of fighter jets that had been miscaptioned as American F-15s attacking Iran
I double-checked. Ben was actually sharing footage from a video game
For Mark Carney, the leader of a democratic country, to back a war his counterpart Trump started without the approval of the United States government, should raise serious questions for Canadians about the value our own Prime Minister places on our democratic process.
While the Trump admin works with right-wing creators, a White House staffer moonlighting as an anonymous MAGA influencer makes it nearly impossible to distinguish official government messaging from 'organic' online support.

*been* betting it was bullshit that bafta and bbc did anything to accommodate anybody involved and possibly quite the opposite and there it is www.theguardian.com/film/2026/fe...
A lot of people are sharing that clip of the US men's hockey team laughing about the women's team with Trump/Kash Patel. A couple weeks ago, I wrote about how, despite the Heated Rivalry effect, hockey culture still sucks: www.wired.com/story/winter...
knowing that nobody at the BAFTAs spoke to Delroy or Michael, that apparently there was a 'sorry if you were offended' apology, and the fact that the BBC took time to edit "free palestine" and not the slurs has made an already ugly no win situation much worse
Over the past couple years, a common refrain among Canadian authors who didn't support the Giller Prize boycott was that the campaign had a point, but was unlikely to 'make a difference.'
Scotiabank had a $368-million (US) stake in Elbit at the end of 2022. Now it's $0.
Today is the first anniversary of this post. I'm still looking for more work/a new job. If anyone here is looking for a culture journalist with deep experience in reporting, critical analysis, cover stories, etc, let's connect. Highlights of my work are below. Full portfolio and email are in my bio.

I'm hardly the first person to note this, but it's enormously instructive that our President and his followers saw the message "THE ONLY THING MORE POWERFUL THAN HATE IS LOVE" and understood it, correctly, as an attack on them

New story in The Grind.
Amjad Ramadan, a 52-year-old Palestinian-Canadian, is suing his former employer for wrongful dismissal after he was abruptly terminated for speaking out for Palestine.
"There is a campaign to silence us," he told me.

A lot of people cannot just start a paid newsletter or become freelancers to sustain their careers. The sports, metro, and international desks did work that requires *team* resources, like legal checks, documents, access to archives, and long-term beat experience.
The mass layoffs at the Washington Post feel worse than the ones made during 2020, especially after the ones at NBC News, CBS, and the WSJ. So many smart and experienced people will leave the industry forever.
Screenshot from The New Yorker There have been some critiques of the movie. People have said that it was essentially a payoff from Amazon to the White House, and that you’re doing propaganda for an authoritarian President. I know you said you don’t want to get into politics, but what do you think of that critique? Well, you know, I felt like I was a reporter. I see. You see what I mean? Sure. It’s, like, would you do an interview with Melania or President Trump yourself? Probably yes. It doesn’t mean that you think the same way or that you approve of him doing what he’s doing. You and I are two journalists talking, essentially. Yeah. So, I mean, to me, the experience was about, yes, being a reporter—being a cinematographer in a documentary, and doing my best to make Melania look visually beautiful with the lighting. One thing reporters try to do is to spotlight ideas or news stories, and what you’re trying to do is spotlight her face and its beauty. I do see a real similarity there. Yeah. We were trying to do the best we could.
Mercy.

Really hard to look at this and all the other examples of bravery and kindness from ordinary people in this moment not think also of the tremendous cowardice exhibited over the past year by some of the richest, most well-protected people in business, media and politics

At least four videos show what really happened when ICE shot a woman in Minneapolis on Wednesday. DHS has established itself as an agency that cannot be trusted to live in or present reality. @evystadium.bsky.social has more.

Industry is one of my fav shows (and still criminally underrated) and the excellent new season takes on porn, age verification, and the rise of authoritarianism. I talked to the cast and creators about it: www.wired.com/story/hbo-in...
