Today, I'm here once more for the late great Harry Garuba, whose 'provisional reflections' on animism, modernity/ colonialism, and the African Order of Knowledge deserves continual carefuly readings, and to be plied, cited and extended.
The volume is peppered with major STS scholars - Verran, Blaser, Vivieros de Castro, de la Cadena, Turnbull to name some. But I've always found joy in teaching undergrads the chapters by Nhemachema, Mabeza, and Cohen.
Every time I come back to this book I find new tracks to think with. It feels fresh every time. Don't skip Crain Soudien's intro. As universities face turmoil, his is a reminder to re-think how knowledge production fits into historical logics of developmentalism.
