A judge in Vermont has ordered Tufts University student RΓΌmeysa ΓztΓΌrk immediately released from ICE detention. ΓztΓΌrk has been held in a notorious prison in Louisiana. She still faces the threat of deportation, apparently in retaliation for co-authoring a piece for her student newspaper about Gaza.

Me, yesterday: yay, I finished my first year teaching in higher ed. Time to finish up grades so I can take a short break before summer classes
My body, this morning: please say hello to a sore throat, headache, and body aches.
Dictators, fascists, and oligarchs want us to believe that they are all-powerful and that weβd be nothing without them. The reality is, they donβt create anything. WE the people create EVERYTHING! This poster was inspired by this passage from Daniel Hunterβs article β10 ways to be prepared and grounded now that Trump has wonβ: βIt will be helpful to have a power analysis in our minds, specifically thatβs known as the upside-down triangle. This tool was built to explain how power moves even under dictatorships. The central tenet is that like an upside-down triangle, power can be unstable. It naturally topples over without anything supporting it. To prevent that, power relies on pillars of support to keep it upright. β¦ Describing the pillars of support, Gene Sharp wrote: βBy themselves, rulers cannot collect taxes, enforce repressive laws and regulations, keep trains running on time, prepare national budgets, direct traffic, manage ports, print money, repair roads, keep markets supplied with food, make steel, build rockets, train the police and army, issue postage stamps or even milk a cow. People provide these services to the ruler though a variety of organizations and institutions. If people would stop providing these skills, the ruler could not rule.β Removing one pillar of support can often gain major, life-saving concessions. In response to Trumpβs 2019 government shutdown, flight attendants prepared a national strike. Such a strike would ground planes across the country and a key transportation network. Within hours of announcing they were βmobilizing immediatelyβ for a strike, Trump capitulated.β β Daniel Hunter, Waging Nonviolence

@npr.org for every minute spent talking to a non-autistic person about autistic people's needs, you should be giving at least 2x that amount to actually autistic peopleβ & not just in written stories, but on-air.
Apply said rubric to any other group under attack right now for their lived realities.
What a shameful endorsement.

EVERYONE SHOULD BE WORRIED ABOUT THIS
EVERYONE.
When people break the law, and their actions are righteous and appropriate, we should applaud them. When people abide by or enforce the law, and their actions are repugnant, we should condemn them. We should never pretend the law is a moral dividing line.
An autism "registry" culled from private medical records could potentially violate federal privacy laws and runs the risk of abuse.
It also harkens back to a time when disabled people were labeled, segregated, and excluded. We won't go back.
In my grad union, we organized an access needs article. It included eliminating required medical documentation.
The admin rejected our proposals at every turn.
Now, RFK, Jr. wants to create a registry of Autistic people.
That required documentation makes people less safe.
ANNOUNCING THE LAUNCH OF Chrysalis a new literary magazine by trans youth, for trans youth (created with a little help from trans adults) These days, it feels like we are always hearing about trans kids and teens: Chrysalis was created so that trans, non-binary, intersex, gender- queer, agender, two-spirit, and gender expansive youth can speak for themselves - and most impor- tantly, speak to one another. Because it's #EarthDay, I'm resharing my open library Against AI and Its Environmental Harms at: pad.riseup.net/p/Against_AI...
Educators, as we consider our work and commitments to our students and their futures, how are we teaching about AI's climate impacts? How are we resisting AI hype? #EduSky
Poor reporter interviewing me about financial aid next year got an earful when they asked if I think anything can be done to stop a disaster from happening. Just me ranting "this isn't the asteroid from Armageddon, this is a self-inflicted wound and we could reverse these illegal firings any day."
It's been three months + 1 day since Elon Musk did a Nazi salute, twice, at the inauguration.
If you're still focused on pro-Palestine protestors as a threat to American Jews, then you don't really care about us.
If you're still saying that cancel culture by the left is a thing, you're full of it.
I am not a big fan of re-boots but hear me out...
it's important this go as viral as the original story for morale purposes if nothing else. despite the image they project these people are NOT unaccountable. consequences CAN be forced. focused anger and outrage MATTERS.
There are just too many legendary JD Vance memes today to get any serious work done.
At the very least, a Secretary of Defense probably shouldnβt be an incorrigible yapper. Every middle school student only had to learn about βloose lips sink shipsβ ONCE to be like βitβs time to tighten up!β
Me: Yay! I got a bunch of grading done this weekend. Let's see, what is on the to-do list for tomorrow. Surely, my hard work will make this week a bit less hectic. π

Me: Oh, more grading. A LOT more grading. π«£
I'm quite comfortable with abolishing deportations and giving every immigrant and refugee a home and food and education and a job and safety, and if you object on the basis that we don't give citizens those things, my answer is simply that we should be giving those things already.
What it should say: everyone has knowledge. Everyone asks questions.
No kings protest in Binghamton NY πΊπ² this is what democracy looks like. Love my community in Broome county NY.
A few hundred people in Binghamton came out to today and collectively said no to fascism.
Two observations:
1. So many people driving by cheered & honked in solidarity.
2. The crowd skewed older (60+).
Legacy media might not cover this, but collective dissent is happening across the country.

While many leaders are failing to meet this moment with active resistance and solidarity, many educators are doing the important work to protect immigrant students, families, and community members.
"The agreement includes meaningful raises, smaller class sizes, and more classroom resources, but it also codifies some of the most comprehensive LGBTQ+ protections ever included in a public school labor deal."
