I’ve put it on my to-do list to try dyeing one of our Harlow bras and show the results.
In the meantime I’ve written a short article on Substack about dyeing clothes at home.
My golden rule?
Never dye anything you’re not prepared to lose.

Synthetic fabrics need dyes specifically designed for synthetics.
These can be harder to find on the high street, so you’ll usually need to look online.
Even then, results can vary depending on the fabric.
At the weekend I found the perfect example at a flea market.
A vintage longline bra had clearly been dyed using a cotton dye.
The natural fibre trims had turned a lovely deep black.
But the synthetic body of the bra had stubbornly stayed pale and patchy.
Someone asked recently if it’s possible to dye one of our bullet bras.
The short answer is: yes… but dyeing lingerie is a bit of a gamble.
There are usually several different fabrics and trims involved, and each one takes dye differently.

Mesh stockings were hugely popular in the 50s & 60s for exactly this reason — glamour and practicality. Reinforced heel and toe, soft stretch, and that subtle retro texture.
