And if they do the trend seems to be Astro turf and Barton fencing. Itβs desperately sad

Today my year 8s thought an image of some foxgloves was AI because they didnβt think plants came in that colour.
They lost it when I showed them species of Acer with red leaves.
Have they so little cultural/science capital now that this is where weβre at??
I feel Iβm moving further and further away from teachingβ¦
And PSHE. Some parents (not all; I know many, many amazing parents) want to absolve themselves of all educational responsibility. What they seem to not take into consideration is where are children going to learn knowledge for their potential career, or dare I say, fun??
This is the kind of nonsense (from the US, where they donβt have a system like HMRC) that our parents get hold of and slam education over.
At some point in time we have to reidentify and redraw the line that shows what is a parentβs role and a schoolβs role
It doesnβt even scratch the surface. I argued against rent increase last year on the basis the house wasnβt at market value condition-wise. It still went ahead.
Iβm so glad heβs had βlovely pay risesβ. Heβs right about the funding being in every every areas, but the reality is I canβt afford any more rent or bill increases. Lots of workers canβt.
π© I reached out to SENCO yesterday form support with a pupil. Response? Call home.
Same π©
And @janeteachesscience.bsky.social spec is wonderful vague; 2024 practical hand book also mentions βalternatives such as rubbing on paperβ. I am so convinced I saw something about them not being examined on lipid testing anymore
In my head, a few years ago, I recall something about them no longer being scanned on it?
And theyβve never asked in any paper Iβve seen
AQA science people. Food tests. Did I imagine them removing the test for lipids??
Almost spat my drink out.
Itβs reminiscent of that time we had compulsory well being training on a glorious half day before Easter. Kids went home before lunch. We were made to sit in a stiff hall and meditate
Flabbergasted
13 kids turned up for Biology Booster today. First time Iβve ran/offered it.
Mix of my kids and some other from different classes.
Very proud of them
π±
The only odd take here is AK is here thinking parents have no place in monitoring their childβs internet use.
There are, of course, much larger issues regarding the lack of accountability and regulation of social media overall. However accusing someone of not caring for the kids here is wild.
Donβt get me wrong, my walls are white and I have minimal display boards.
But the kids draw me things and leave me lovely little notes; I like to show my appreciation and so I display them.
Did make me laugh though. Considering shes also contributed π€£
I have pictures around my smart board. Theyβve been drawn for me over the year Iβve been at my new school. I teach secondary, mind you π€£
Today, one of my year 9s said she found it all βtoo muchβ and βshe could neverβ finishing with βover stimulatingβ.
I fear we have overused another word.
To be honest, I have sat on the loo far longer than I should have to have a break π©
Just donβt know why parents wonβt admit it
Nope. Nor the notion that they sometimes want to go to the loo to avoid work
Ergo, weβve created microcosms of superficial learning
@mathsimpact.bsky.social added you bc canβt seem to rely to both of you?
Because if the inherent nature of observations/learning walks/ OFSTED we have to prove on a micro level the kids are making progress. Macro - as in at the end of a KS - is too far.
1/2
I fear all the time weβre under this level of scrutiny, weβll be too scared to just let the kids sit and ponder for a bit.
What Iβd really like to see is letting them fail. Not maliciously, but showing them that *they* are the ones that need to work.
Shouldβve said βexcessiveβ
Itβs an easy life because we need to kids to be busy and working under the guise of pace and learningβ¦which accessing scaffolding isnβt.
Thatβs a sticking plaster for behaviour and culture, and deskilling
YES!!!ππ»
And thatβs exactly what it should be.
IME itβs become a lethal mutation; one that needs to be evidenced, on the board, that itβs being done.
So you end up supporting those who donβt need it and those kids become deskilled in the process
Which is now the expectation in lessons. To supply support from the get go.
Theyβre struggling because they donβt know what struggling or persevering looks like.
In an observation, where a lot is at stake, scaffolding is then put in place too quickly just to get the pupils on task
