Chateau du Tailhas Pomerol 2008, Bordeaux, France It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Let's bring Merlot back! Dark ruby/ purple in color with a wide reddish/ brick rim. Pretty nose of red and black fruits with light wood, herbs, light chocolates, earth, coffee and black pepper. Medium plus in body with medium acidity. Dry on the palate with black currants, black plums, cooked cherries, light oak, tobacco leaf, herbs, peppercorn, earth, dark chocolates and black tea. Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries. This is a delicious Merlot from Pomerol. Well balanced and complex. Tangy and tasty. Rich and elegant, with enough fruits to compliment the earth notes. Spicy and entertaining. This 18 year old is drinking at its peak now, and will continue to drink nicely in the next few years. I've had a few vintages of this wine, and it is much better with age. A good sipping wine that will also pair nicely with food. A blend of 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc. Aged for 12 months in (50% new) French oak barrels. 13% alcohol by volume. 92 points. $80.

Krug Grande Cuvée 171th Edition Brut Champagne, France Lemon in color with a golden hue. Pretty nose with flowers, yeast, citrus, lemons, green apples, limes, spices, herbs and minerals. Medium bodied with high acidity, and medium sized bubbles. Dry on the palate with limes, grapefruits, citrus, green apples, light earth, minerals, herbs, sea salt and light spices. Long finish with limes and light herbs. This is a delicious Champagne, but feels extremely young. Elegant and nicely balanced. Complex and interesting. Rich and tangy. Soft and smooth. Much better after 45 minutes of airtime, and better when not too cold. Will continue to age nicely in the next 20 years. Good by itself as a sipping wine or with food. A blend of 45% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay and 18% Meunier. 12.5% alcohol by volume. 92 points. $250.

Sweet on the palate with high acidity to balance the sugars. Showing melons, tropical fruits, apples, light earth, guava, herbs, spices, papaya and honey notes. Long finish with herbs and tropical fruits. This is a gorgeous sweet wine from Bordeaux. Sexy, seductive and fresh. Creamy and buttery. Showing great potential, but oh so young. Already delicious and complex. Round, opulent and powerful. Loved the nose once it opened up (20 minutes in the glass). Rich and extracted. Fruit forward and intense, yet elegant. Well balanced with a soft mouthfeel. Good by itself as a sipping wine, or with food. Drunk from a Magnum. A blend of 75% Sémillon and 25% Sauvignon Blanc. The Vice Wines Torie's Vineyard Pinot Noir 2024, Los Carneros, California Purple/ reddish in color with medium plus intensity. Fruity nose of black currants, plums, cherries, oak, sweet candy, light vanilla and lots of chocolate notes. Medium plus in body with medium acidity. Dry on the palate with plums, currants, oak, chocolates, black pepper, light herbs and spices. Medium finish with soft tannins and tangy raspberries. This young Pinot Noir from Napa Valley is already drinking nicely. Rich, juicy and fruit forward. Elegant and nicely balanced. This Single Vineyard Pinot Noir is showing nice complexity with a soft mouthfeel. Good right out of the bottle, and gets earthier as it opens up. It needs about an hour to open up properly, but we didn’t have that luxury as it finished way too quickly. Would be nice to revisit it in a few years. Easy drinking, and good by itself or with food. Paired very nicely with pizza. 100% Pinot Noir grapes were aged for 9 months in all new French Oak barrels. A small production of only 3,000 bottles. Unfiltered and unfined. 14.1% alcohol by volume. 91 points. $68.

Beautiful nose of black fruits with wood, earth, herbs, chocolates and black pepper. Medium plus in body with medium acidity. Dry on the palate with black currants, plums, cooked cherries, spices, cedar, chocolates, licorice and dark coffee. Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cherries. This 15 year old Merlot from Cotes de Bourg is drinking beautifully now. Elegant and rich. Complex, powerful and interesting. Balanced and complex with a soft mouthfeel. Will continue to age nicely in the next 5 to 7 years. I've had younger vintages and it is very consistent. Delicious by itself as a sipping wine. A blend of mostly Merlot with Cabernet Franc. Aged in French oak barrels. 14% alcohol by volume. 92 points. $80.

Dry and fruity on the palate with cherries, plums, currants, light oak, spices, chocolates, licorice and light black pepper. Medium length on the finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries. This is a very tasty Cabernet Sauvignon based Bordeaux blend from Napa Valley. Nicely balanced and complex. Rich and fruit forward. Delicate and engaging. Elegant and easy drinking right out of the bottle, and much better after 2 hours in the decanter. Showing a very pretty nose once it opens up. This Single Vineyard Red Blend will continue to age nicely in the next 5 to 7 years. I had the 2021 vintage a year ago and it is very consistent. Good by itself as a sipping wine, or with food. The Walls Vineyards Stanley Groovy Lip Stinger 2023, Washington State Nice color of lemon with a golden hue. Nose of citrus, lemons, apples, earth, spices, limes and minerals. Medium bodied with medium acidity. Dry on the palate with grapefruits, lemons, green apples, spices, bitter herbs and light earth. Tangy finish with limes and spices. This is a very tasty white Rhone blend from Washington State. Elegant and nicely balanced. Spicy, delicate and entertaining. Feels like a White Châteauneuf-du-Pape. A lovely surprise. Good right out of the bottle, gets earthier as it opens up, and the high alcohol is not noticeable. Good by itself or with food, and paired very nicely with the Avocado Tuna Tartar. A blend of 60% Grenache Blanc, 18% Roussanne, 9% Picpoul, 9% Viognier and 4% Marsanne. 14.6% alcohol by volume. 91 points. $32.

Full-bodied and elegant, with medium acidity and long legs. Dry and fruit forward on the palate with blackberries, black plums, cooked cherries, dried fruits, cedar, chocolates, figs, cola, vanilla, licorice, tobacco, herbs, spices and light earth. Long finish with fine grained tannins and cherries. This 17 year old Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley is still drinking beautifully. Rich and engaging. Elegant, soft and fruit forward. Beautifully balanced with a nice mouthfeel. Needed 90 minutes in the bottle to open up properly and show great complexity, with good structure. This gorgeous Cabernet is still drinking at its peak, but will not get better from this point on. Will continue to drink nicely in the next 7 years. A great sipping wine that will pair nicely with a big piece of steak too. A blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Merlot. Long finish with fine grained tannins and cherries. This 17 year old Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley is still drinking beautifully. Rich and engaging. Elegant, soft and fruit forward. Beautifully balanced with a nice mouthfeel. Needed 90 minutes in the bottle to open up properly and show great complexity, with good structure. This gorgeous Cabernet is still drinking at its peak, but will not get better from this point on. Will continue to drink nicely in the next 7 years. A great sipping wine that will pair nicely with a big piece of steak too. A blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Merlot. Optio Vineyards Paso Robles Tempranillo 2023, California Deep purple in color with a short purplish rim. Fruity nose with black currants, black plums, cooked cherries, dried figs, light cedar, dark chocolates and light black pepper. Full-bodied and elegant with medium acidity and long legs. Dry on the palate with black currants, plums, cooked cherries, spices, oak, chocolates, peppercorn, licorice and light herbs. Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries. This is a delicious Tempranillo from Paso Robles. Fruit forward, chewy and complex. Rich and extracted. Already drinking beautifully, although still young, and the alcohol is nicely integrated. It is drinking much better than the 2022 vintage I had not long ago. Good right out of the bottle, and good by itself as a sipping wine. Paired beautifully with my steak. 14.5% alcohol by volume. 92 points. $65.

Dry on the palate with limes, light grapefruits, herbs ,light earth, spices, pineapples and sea salt. Nice length on the finish with limes and grapefruits. This is a delicious Vermentino from Mendocino county. What a nice surprise. Nicely balanced, spicy and entertaining. Showing nice complexity, fruity and interesting. Rich, crisp and refreshing. Good right out of the bottle, and better after 30 minutes of airtime. Would be nice to revisit it in a year or two. Good by itself or with food. Would also pair nicely with seafood dishes. 100% Vermentino grapes were aged in stainless steel vats. A tiny production of only 500 bottles. 14.3% alcohol by volume. 92 points. $29.

It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Let's bring Merlot back! Deep ruby in color with a reddish rim. Nose of black currants, blackberries, black cherries, cedar, coffee, toast, light vanilla, dark chocolates, peppercorn, licorice, light earth, herbs and spices. Full-bodied with medium acidity and long legs. Dry on the palate with cooked plums, currants, cedar, vanilla, spices, espresso, earth, tobacco leaf, herbs and peppercorn. Long finish with medium tannins and tangy cherries. This is a young Bordeaux blend from Yountville in Napa Valley. Rich and extracted. Dense and fruit forward. Chewy and interesting. This Single Vineyard is very dry right out of the bottle, and better after 90 minutes of airtime. Nicely balanced and complex. Will continue to age nicely in the next 10 to 15 years. Good by itself or with food. A blend of 51% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Malbec. 14.2% alcohol by volume. 92 points. $80.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity. Dry on the palate and fruit forward with cooked cherries, plums, light oak, chocolates, licorice, spices, tobacco leaf, dark coffee and herbs. Nice finish with soft tannins and tangy raspberries. This 8 year old Pinot Noir from Napa Valley is drinking at the end of its peak. Complex and engaging. Nicely balanced with a soft mouthfeel. Rich and fruit forward. Fully resolved now, and would not get any better from this point. The alcohol is well integrated by now. Good right out of the bottle, and good by itself as a sipping wine. Pinot Noir grapes were aged in French oak barrels for 11 months. 14.75% alcohol by volume. 91 points. $60 (at release).

Horsepower Sur Echalas Vineyard Grenache 2013, Walla Walla Valley, Washington State Dark ruby in color with a wide reddish /brick rim. Medium plus in body with medium plus acidity. Very dry on the palate with nice complexity. Showing red and black fruits with light wood, spices, barnyard, blood, dried meats, dark chocolates, tobacco leaf, earth, herbs, peppercorn and licorice. Nice finish with soft tannins and tangy raspberries. This Single Vineyard Grenache from Walla Walla Valley is very stinky and austere on the nose. Complex and very interesting, but not what I expected at all. Feels more like an old world wine. Wine Advocate 95 points. Wine Spectator 94 points. Wine Enthusiasts 94 points. I had a recent vintage a couple of years ago and it showed much better. Might just be this particular bottle, or it could be past its prime by now. A good quality wine and still very drinkable. 13.2% alcohol by volume. 91 points. $120.
