Thanks to Starlightk7's OpenSFC project, you can now resurrect dead SNES/SFC controllers and make them look better than ever.
I put together an install guide here, and you can purchase these PCBs from 1uprestorations.com and build them yourself!

Oh man that’s perfect lol

It took a few hours since I had to test continuity on a bunch of traces, solder them back together, then add epoxy on the opposite side to give the board some structural stability again. Not fun but very satisfying to see it live again

Yeah I was hellbent on getting this working again. By some miracle, the tube was not destroyed even though the neck board was obliterated by shipping.

Amazing work - so glad that you found the final issues and a modern part to replace the dead transformer! Which part did you end up using?

Special thanks to @zallard1.bsky.social for letting me know about this glorious console on ebay! I wish I had filmed it for a video, but at least it lives again!

And by some miracle, this thing is alive and fully restored! I can't believe that nothing was permanently damaged by that nightmare mod. 4/

I soldered in a new multiout, checked the console for shorts, and then gave it a try... 3/

It took some time, but I used IPA to remove the hot glue and then carefully desoldered each wire. I was surprised to see the board was in decent shape underneath the Cthulu VGA connector and all of the aluminum foil that covered each wire 2/

Behold, the most terrifying N64 RGB mod I have ever seen in my life! I grabbed this N64 on eBay for $10 and the seller claimed that he did this RGB mod in the early 2000s. And apparently it worked!

Let's see if we can fix it: 1/

Yeah, it’s really puzzling. I don’t know what the justification was, but I definitely remember going into those shops and seeing plenty of pre-modded Saturn’s, all with a switch on the front just like that lol

12.01.2026 14:19 πŸ‘ 3 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

When I got mine done, I insisted that the switch was installed in the back. I was probably 16 or so but I thought it looked terrible in the front even then lol

12.01.2026 14:14 πŸ‘ 3 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

It might sound crazy, but this was actually the norm way back in the late 90s. I used to go to Chinatown in NYC for Saturn imports, and all of those shops had β€œtechs” that would install these region switches, usually installed in the front

Despite lots of challenges, 2025 was a good year for me and I want to thank everyone that watched my videos or sent in consoles for repairs/mods.

My proudest moment of 2025 was the @liretro.bsky.social NES 40th anniversary, which you can see here:

I had one with the exact same fault and eventually I found a cut trace near that regulator that solved all my problems. But you can also work around it using an external 9v to 5v regulator and an LCDDRV

One final repair before I rest for the holidays - a PC Engine LT! This one came back to life after a recap but the backlight on its display was barely working.
I replaced the original screen with an LCDDRV, and now it’s looking better than ever!
