Do piperacillin/tazobactam and other antibiotics with inhibitory activity against Clostridium difficile reduce the risk for acquisition of C. difficile colonization? - PubMed Our findings suggest that piperacillin/tazobactam achieves sufficient concentrations in the intestinal tract to inhibit C. difficile colonization during therapy.

I suppose if you're wiping out most of the gut flora, better to go all the way than to spare anaerobes. It is a little odd, though. Among agents with activity against C.diff, only pip/tazo was associated with a lower risk of colonization (caveat of small n). pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27091232/

Pip/tazo has some activity against C.diff and may prevent sporulation while cefepime does not. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

Ceftriaxone is not a strong inducer, though. This is the concern with bacteria with inducible ampC; the mechanism that allows inducibility can result in a resistant subpopulation with mutations that cause "stably derepressed" AmpC production that is hidden by the larger susceptible population.
