I doubt the move from badly optimised-> consequences->highly optimised is console or games specific which is why I raised that example.

Tbh I'd be interested to know how AI trained on highly optmized code (likely internal to companies and not for general model training) and instructed by optimisation savvy engineers would perform at the tasks.

I think it's more that people will learn what can and can't be AI assisted in dev. And there's likely going to be a wave of people hired to do late optimisations and some games will fail due to bad perf as they always have.

Right now there's no consequence for bad optimisation, but soon enough there will be, and there'll be a wider reaction.
Not to say it's ideal, but it keeps happening and keeps getting figured out.

I'd be a bit more optimistic on this front tbh. Generally every new console gen has more processing power so the first wave of games tend to be badly optimised. Then games get bigger through the life cycle and by the end they're all highly optimised to can get back perf.

I've recently realised that people are starting to conflate automation with generative AI and... no? God no. Why?
This is like how "algorithm" morphed to mean "mythical evil taste curator". It's accurate in none of the ways that matter and inaccurate for everything else.

Patrick Freyne, writer of this iconic piece has a novel coming out soon
I hadn't recognised the name but honestly this reminder of his writing was enough to make me preorder his book

ah here lads I just finished editing and published a podcast episode I recorded in September. Such unquantifiable productivity on a Sunday can only spell disaster for getting things done next week but I'm riding this high as far as it'll take me.

(I immediately identified a problem which will be significantly harder to fix now that more people can see the site πŸ™ƒ win some. Lose some.)

On a funner note I sent my bookish side project on to a few people who are not close friends (and therefore forced to be nice to me). Progress! Confidence! Power!

Happy annual event where I question why the hell I chose to work in the games industry.

yeah yeah yeah we've all played Final Fantasy

Related aside: Marilyn Monroe was the first big actor to set up an independent production company and try to work outside the studio system. She was eviscerated for it.

It's probably more complicated than this, either that or the answer is "cause politicians don't understand technology" which depressingly seems equally likely.

Or would it only be antitrust if Epic owned Steam and had their own set promotion through that? But then that'd mean any Valve games would be an antitrust violation.

06.03.2026 18:08 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

If it's a violation of anti trust to have a company own the studio, make the movie and own the theatre deciding how and when it's shown, why can a company own the engine, make the game, own the distribution platform and decide how the game's promoted.

I was looking up the fall of the Hollywood studio system today (cause what else would you do on a Friday) and can't help wondering why the Paramount Decree which essentially banned full vertical integration and control of distrib channels doesn't apply to a company like Epic.

After getting lasik they recommend you wear wrap around sunglasses outside for a few weeks.
They say it's to protect your eyes.
I can now reveal it's actually to stop you scaring small children or being attacked by over enthusiastic zombie hunters.

We really need to change how we talk about industries where the big players have priced themselves out of their own profits.
The ecosystems aren't dying, the giants are starving, there's a different.

I'm only on episode 10. I haven't watched it since it was on tv so I have very few expectations, I don't expect my 6yo self to have good taste, and I'm mostly enjoying it.
Y'know once you get past how the first 4 eps all have weird "oooh theres a girl on the team"/ sexual overtones to them.

I was gonna post about my weekend but realised it'd involve revealing that not only am I rewatching SG1, I just started reading Flowers for Algernon. And, folks, I'm a fantasy nerd not a scifi nerd, I can't accept this kind of brand dilution.

Not having my work stuff on my phone isn't enough, I need to delete the Internet and hide in a cave if I don't want work details broadcast to me on the weekend. 😭

In case you didn't know,(cause a lot of people don't) The Guard and Calvary are by Michael McDonagh, but Banshees, Billboards, Bruges, Leenane and Aran plays are by Martin McDonagh. They're brothers and have superficially similar styles, but overall I think they're very different

I knew the first one and have spent the Winter Olympics wondering if maybe the Muhgals were famous for skiing.
Not gonna lie, I'm pretty disappointed with reality right now.

Today in The English Language:
mogul and mogul are totally unrelated.
A media mogul comes from the Muhgal empire that ruled most of India for hundreds of years.
A skiing mogul comes from the Bavarian/Austrian German word mugel meaning mound.

YouTube has decided to show me some weirdly US/UK right wing ads today, which is very confusing.
I haven't watched anything different and I know for a fact my most googled query lately is "how to calc x as a percentage of y"
Is lacking confidence in maths now a conservative trait?

A mixture of dedication, commitment, and insanity? Throw in a secret lanuguage shrouded in layers of meaning built over years.
It must be love.
Or the Barkely Marathons.
A valentines edition is quite apt.
