Yes! It's so good!
Yes! It's so good!
I'll second the recommendation for Shadowdark. The rules are similar to 5E but distilled down to run more efficiently. It's a dungeon crawler by design, there are tables in the core book for randomizing all kinds of stuff, dungeons, hex crawls, encounters, treasure, etc.

So cool! This is very charming for those of us of a certain age.
I never thought Iβd see Shadowdark x Moody Blues but I like it!
Dungeon crawlers, I think you'll want to look at this. #ttrpg #mcdm
I am very intrigued by what this is going to be. You are tackling some very fun challenges with this game.
*looks to the sky* Am I going to have to buy yet another game?
*sigh* Yes. Yes, I think so.
I enjoy Bluesky and the communities I follow are all welcoming and friendly. I don't check in all the time, though. There is something missing. Maybe it needs to be a little livelier? I don't know.

Nice. Shadowdark doesnβt leave my side much.
Iβve been curious about Cairn for a while now.
I love Shadowdark but it's not because it does something new and unique. It's the refinement and conciseness of the book, some of the welcome changes to mechanics like spell casting. You are right, though. It doesn't redefine the genre.
@altmadison.bsky.social I can picture Cake playing a killer cover of the Sanford and Son theme song.
The reason I mentioned Shadowdark is because it is more word than art but the layout puts everything about a topic on opposing pages, descriptions are crisp and short as possible. Itβs so easy to read and reference. The layout wouldnβt work for every game but I wish more books were like it.
I think some art to catch attention and to better describe or highlight some concepts are important but I think itβs ultimately the quality of the words that matter. If itβs easy to read without being overly wordy itβs a good balance. Just my preference, anyway.
I was in that discussion. Daggerheart was more inviting for me to read because of the artwork and page layout breaking the text up a bit. Draw Steel still has gorgeous artwork throughout.
Funny though, my favorite TTRPG book design is word and table heavy. Itβs Shadowdark. Fantastic book design,IMO
Have fun! Daggerheart is easy to prep for and easy to improv when you need to. Itβs such a flexible system.
I felt the reverse. I saw the Draw Steel book and the walls of text overwhelmed me compared to Daggerheartβs layout. Both are great, though.
Congrats on the crowdfunding success and your new role. First Iβm hearing of Crows. Color me intrigued.
This is a great choice by Wizards and positive news for the future of Dungeons & Dragons.
Sounds like great fun! Good luck with family game night. Shadowdark is very refreshing. I love D&D but after a decade of playing in campaigns I was feeling a little tired of it. Then I found Shadowdark and it was the refresh I needed.
I finally explored Shadowdark and fell completely in love with its elegant simplicity and conciseness. I am a believer!
I havenβt looked at MΓΆrk Borg yet but I keep hearing great things.
Have you looked into Legend in the Mist? It isnβt specifically set in that era but it is rustic fantasy and designed in a way that you could make it work with as much or as little magic and fantasy ancestries as you feel appropriate.
Youβll do great! Another nice trait about running Daggerheart is that the collaboration between GM and players means you can breathe a little and let the players help tell the story.
Learning and running a different system might be easier for a first time GM. You are able to work from clean slate.
Daggerheartβs core book also has some truly fantastic GM advice that can apply to any game you want to run.
Legend in the Mist has been a pleasant, refreshing surprise of a game for me. I havenβt run it yet but excited to do so with my game group.
Shadowdark was my holiday break deep dive. My list of games to play this year keeps growing!!
Oh! I would also suggest looking at Legend in the Mist. I have only begun to scratch the surface of it. It's a narrative game built entirely on descriptive tags rather than stats. The "rustic fantasy" setting is very appealing to me, personally. Refreshing.
Daggerheart was built for this. Collaborative storytelling and easy to learn, yet robust, game mechanics.
Numenera has a great setting that invites imagination. The game is easy to learn.
I havenβt played/run it yet but I recently got the Shadowdark core book and it has completely blown my mind.
Happy New Year everybody!
