Make me chuckle!
A moment of near invisibility.
This woodcock was filmed on a camera trap in Cornwall. There are points where the crown and eye line almost disappear into the leaf litter.
The camouflage is extraordinary and isn’t just a nice adaptation – it’s essential for not being noticed.
Dead wood is not waste. It is habitat. As trunks and branches decay, they provide food, shelter and breeding space for hundreds of species – fungi, beetles, birds, mammals and amphibians.
A short camera trap moment of a water vole from one of my reintroduction sites. The raft is there for monitoring, they like to eat on them as you can see my all the remnants!

A nice roe deer interaction one of the camera traps. An older buck gently asserting himself over a younger one.
This is way too early in the year for rutting, so more likely just establishing a hierarchy for use of resources.

We’ve been taking some time to review a year’s worth of camera trap footage, and this woodcock moment stood out immediately.
Their camouflage is extraordinary, an adaptation to a life spent feeding among leaf litter at dawn and dusk!
