Last night at the meeting, someone said that they loved using AVs in Phoenix except for the huge screen that blares ads at you the whole time. The screen is a sensory nightmare that amounts to an accessibility issue, so hopefully there will be a way to turn off the ads.

โ€ฆAnd why would they do that?

Is it me, or are AV enthusiasts predicting that AVs will bring about the same positive changes that Uber/Lyft were supposed to, but didnโ€™t?

TBH Iโ€™m not optimistic about AV companies abiding by any rules Portland sets out, since the attitude seems to be โ€œAVs are coming to your city; you just have to accept it.โ€

โ€œThe comment period [about bringing AVs to Portland] will be open through April 4th and thereโ€™s a public hearing today (Weds, March 11th) from 6:00 to 7:30 pm at the Portland Building downtown (Zoom also available).โ€

Since it came up again, here is my advice to anyone who wants to knit socks but finds them intimidating:

Start with baby socks, ideally DK or worsted-weight. They are quick and easy, and they will give you a sense of How Socks Work that translates fully to grown-up sizes.

I have truly made converting people away from TurboTax and onto FreeTaxUSA like a key goal in life. it is ENRAGING that we are forced to live like this because of one company lobbying to forcibly monetize something that other peopleโ€™s governments just do for them

You can get nerdy about the musical decisionsโ€”the musical theater, the period-appropriate piano accompaniment, the opera, the club music, and the WTF is going on, all carefully selected and woven together for story/character purposesโ€”or you can just ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿฟ

Anyway: what are YOU going to do to make in-person connections safe for disabled people, queer but especially trans people, for kids who can't drive? If the answer is "nothing" don't blame them for not logging off.

It just occurred to me--it is statistically probable that at least one person reading this has never seen Donald O'Connor stake his claim to GOAT status in SINGIN' IN THE RAIN. I must remedy that immediately:

Looks at sky high gas prices and ponders what could have been if we had only invested in safe bike infrastructure, public transit, and massive rebates for e-bikes

Yeah any industry that has unique, industry specific diseases with names like "black lung" is not a great industry to support

This cartoon has four panels, plus an additional tiny โ€œkickerโ€ panel under the fourth panel. Each panel shows the same man talking directly at the reader. He has neatly combed blonde hair with a full beard. His outfit says โ€œrural salt of the earth by way of L.L. Bean.โ€
PANEL 1
The man is talking cheerfully to the readers. Behind him is a quaint small town street lined with stores.
MAN : I tink the best of America is in the small towns โ€“ the wonderful little pockets of what I call The Real America.
PANEL 2
The same man, but now heโ€™s suddenly standing in front of an enormous pile of garbage. Rising up behind the garbage pile, we can see a group of ugly brown high-rise apartment buildings. A large plume of smoke (we canโ€™t see from what) rises into the sky.
MAN: Elite liberals are destroying America with their terrible โ€œNew Yorkโ€ values. Thatโ€™s why their cities are burnt-out shells!
PANEL 3
The man is suddenly much closer to the viewer, yelling, eyes bulging. Behind him we can see a chaotic jumble of big-city ills: A red-eyed rat, buildings on fire, a grocery cart filled with someoneโ€™s possessions in bags, a syringe, another pile of poop, and a person wearing a mask and a black hoodie who is about to throw a flaming Molotov cocktail.
MAN: DEM CITIES ARE DISGUSTING, RAT-INFESTED HOLES THAT NO HUMAN COULD LIVE IN!
PANEL 4
The man is suddenly on a bucolic, hilly farm. The man, no longer in tight close-up, is grasping his hands together and looking a bit upward, almost like heโ€™s praying; he has a sad expression, and a single tear falls from one eye.
MAN: And why do coastal elite snobs say such hateful things about their fellow Americans?
TINY KICKER PANEL UNDER THE BOTTOM OF THE STRIP
Barry the cartoonist, raising a finger to make a point, is talking to the man from the strip. The man has a โ€œIโ€™m so above this nonsenseโ€ smug expression, eyes closed.
BARRY: Donโ€™t you live in a coastal city? And didnโ€™t you go to Harvard?
MAN: In my heart Iโ€™ve always lived on a farm.

It was going on one, two in the morning, and we were shooting what I felt was an important scene for me, when he makes an attempt to be quote-unquote straight, in a suit, and at the end of it he gets emotional and locks himself in the other room. And I felt like, Iโ€™m not getting what I wantโ€”Iโ€™m not happy with it. Mike was happy with it. He called me the next day and said, โ€œI know you werenโ€™t happy with the scene last night. Believe me, we wouldnโ€™t have gone home if I had felt we werenโ€™t getting it.โ€ And then he sort of became my psychiatrist and said, โ€œYou find it difficult to be happy, donโ€™t you? You find it difficult to enjoy things.โ€ And I said, โ€œWell, sometimes. Last night was about feeling too tired and not feeling I was reaching what I needed to reach for the scene.โ€ He talked to me then about when he was making, I donโ€™t know whether it was Virginia Woolf or The Graduate. He said, โ€œI didnโ€™t enjoy it for a second. I was worried about so many things.โ€ And then he said, โ€œYou know, this is never going to happen again quite this way. You should try to allow yourself to enjoy this more. Take a minute a day, and then add a minute the next day, and another minute. Pretty soon, youโ€™ll have hours of happiness.โ€

The Birdcage opened thirty years ago today, so in its honor, I want to share one of my favorite stories about Mike Nichols that didn't make it into my biography. This is from an interview I did with Nathan Lane.

Parking is brutal today. I hope Portland can make transit/biking a more attractive option than circling the neighborhood for half an hour and being late to your concert/game/etc

โ€ฆor we could cut funding for those things ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ
