An Army Corps project could wipe out one of Floridaโ€™s last thriving coral reefs The fate of one of the last thriving coral reefs in Florida may be imperiled by plans to widen the shipping channel leading into Port Everglades.

The US army corps of engineers is considering, right now, what would be the largest destruction of coral reefs in US history. To make a port slightly bigger.

People know this, right?

It is indeed one species, with remarkable camouflage abilities !!! Please take a moment to marvel at their top level mimicry skills ๐Ÿชฑ ๐Ÿ’ฏ And there is a ton more research to do to figure out how they do this, if they can change color when they switch hosts and so on!!

Because they have different colors and live on different hosts we suspected they could belong to different species, or perhaps be on their way to becoming different speciesโ€ฆ so we looked at the similarity in their DNA to checkโ€ฆ ๐Ÿงฌ๐Ÿงฌ๐Ÿงฌand DNA proved our hypothesis wrong!

Phyllodoce lineata against a black background.
The head (top middle-left) has a bright yellow main colour, turning more muddy towards the tip. There are 4 short antennae located at the front as well as 4 pairs of long "tentacles" (tentacular cirri), 3 of which point backwards, and 1 forwards.
In the front half, the back of the body, which is segmented as in all annelids, is also yellow with 3 brown spots per segment (one in the center, 2 on either side at the base of the parapodia). This gives the worm a stripy look.
In the back half, the worm is entirely brown. The bottom side of the worm is a light turquoise colour and slightly iridescent.
On each segment, the worm carries to leaf-shaped appendages, sometimes referred to as paddles.

Pictures of a pink sea anemone sitting on top of a hermit crab shell.

Oh, I love this. A new species of sea anemone was discovered recently that parks itself on top of a hermit crab shell like a hat. It seems to feed partly off the crab's faeces, but it also excretes a hard shell that extends the crab's home. In return, it's carried around the seafloor like a king.

A global coral phylogeny reveals resilience and vulnerability through deep time - Nature The most recent common ancestor of the stony coral Scleractinia dates to about 460โ€‰million years ago and was probably a solitary, heterotrophic and free-living organism.

New Nature paper!

Vaga et al. (2025) reconstruct a time-calibrated phylogeny of stony (scleractinian) corals, which suggests that some could be resilient to climate change.
