Yesterday I woke up to this wonderful essay by my friend David Treuer. David and I were in graduate school together and no doubt had many a conversation about identity.
It is fascinating, and the story embedded in this essay is relevant to the work of @natboundunbound.
Gracias a todas las vidas!
There is still time to help us reach our year end goal for fundraising! Please help us recover the names and histories of those Indigenous enslaved individuals still waiting in the pages of the archives and the whispers of their stories.

December 21, 2025, marked the ninety-nine-year anniversary of the day that Francisco Valdez crossed over and became an Ancestor. His burial followed on December 23.
The Native Bound Unbound site has launched.
Your support helps us recover the histories of Indigenous slavery and strengthens the teams and partnerships behind this effort.
As a new 501(c)(3), we invite you to visit www.nativeboundunbound.org/donations and consider supporting this work.
Thousands of documents are moving through our workflow: locating, digitizing, transcribing, translating, & encoding before they appear on the site.
If you’re searching for something specific, more is on the way.
Come back and join us in this ongoing work of recovery.

AIDA - at the Opéra national de Paris with the staging by the great artist, Shirin Neshat
I had the privilege of attending the Paris Opéra production of Verdi's Aida. At the center of the story is Aida, the enslaved Ethiopian woman & Neshat makes it unfold like an eloquent, deeply resonant poem.
I was honored to have been invited to participate in a workshop to present @natboundunbound.bsky.social The workshop was convened by Schmidt Sciences at the Sorbonne in Paris, France.
Thankful to @505omatic.bsky.social for the interview with executive director Dr. Estevan Rael-Galvez!
