A quick check on Google Scholar confirms there is a *lot* of research on this subject. Most of it appears to be behind a paywall, unfortunately, and my studies didn't focus on buses so all I can say with any certainty is: tread carefully.

An alternative would be to have two categories of bus stop: stopper and express, with express services only serving those stops. Would allow for a comprehensive network with decreased travel time.
