I forget how it goes exactly, but there is a saying about surrounding yourself with people smarter than you. well, that's my strategy. humbled to be part of this team, honored to receive this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity from LUCE/ @acls1919.bsky.social and motivated to make this project special
Big congratulations to @timothyagrose.bsky.social @drdavidtobin.bsky.social @emilyupson.bsky.social, who received a Luce/ACLS Collaborative Grant in China Studies for their project, "Un-Settling Xinjiang: Archiving, Digitizing and Curating Knowledge of Settler Colonial Violence in China and Beyond."
In June 2025, academics and civil society organisations met in London for an International Network for Critical China Studies workshop to analyse how to prevent transnational repression. Governments & NGOs have not paid enough attention to TNR and need to do much more to protect people's rights.
Starting the weekend early, what a vibe ๐
Director of @irishuyghurca.bsky.social speaks to ICIJ about transnational repression against Uyghur people.
This is part of broader research into how Chinese authorities silence activists and dissidents abroad.
Finally, a story about Irish citizen Nuria Zyden, who fled from Xinjiang in 2009 and continues to be harassed by Chinese police up until today. This story will surely accelerate that harassment, so she's brave for doing this.
Again, tons of research about this being part of a broader pattern.
Listen to Nuria, our Director, talk about Uyghurs in Ireland, Uyghur community and culture, social activism, and campaigning for better Uyghur rights ๐ช
Thank you so much Neilo for this platform and for such an engaging conversation ๐
This is an absolute travesty as these men now almost certainly be subject to recriminations and human rights abuse (and possibly worse).
48 #Uyghur men held in limbo for a decade may soon be soon be deported from #Thailand to #China.

A special thanks to Gulya Mametova for co-hosting this lovely gathering of Uyghur women living in Ireland on November 30th, attended by our co-founder Nuria. Together we reflected on the vital role we, as Uyghur mothers & women, play in preserving our traditions, culture, and language ๐

Offering support to colleagues in East Asian Studies at @sheffielduni.bsky.social who are facing severe cutbacks. Sheffield has been a vital nexus of knowledge production and exchange in Asian studies. It would be a huge loss if these cuts were taken on board.
