On 16 Sept 1642 Rosa O'Doherty signed this letter. Here it is for #InternationalWomensDay , 384 years later. This is possibly a unique surviving example of a 17thC signature of a #Gaelic Irishwoman. (The letter is now in @ucdarchives.bsky.social as part of the Franciscan collection)

St Clare of Assisi (1194-1253) was the first woman to write a Rule of Life for her own monastic religious order for women, the Order of Poor Ladies. Following her death, the order was renamed in her honour as the Order of Saint Clare, commonly referred to as the Poor Clares. #InternationalWomensDay

We are very sad to learn of the death of Dr Deirdre McMahon. Deirdre was an historian nonpareil, as well as a staunch advocate for archives and archivists. She was a great friend of UCD Archives over all the decades of our existence. We will miss her. Ar dheis DΓ© go raibh a hanam.

Brian Faulkner was born #OTD 1921. This note in a file of documents concerning post-Sunningdale developments, includes Faulkner's proposal to the SDLP that the Sunningdale Agreement be ratified with the exception of those provisions relating to the Council of Ireland.

Sighle Humphreys married Donal O'Donoghue on 19 February 1935. This writer wishes Donal had 'waited until this unfortunate country was free' before marrying, as many married patriots 'eventually ignored the ills of the Motherland in the tranquillity of the domestic hearth.' #ValentinesDay

The Age of Christ, 525.

The twenty-second year of Muircheartach.

Saint Brighit, virgin, Abbess of Cill Dara, died. It was to her Cill Dara was first granted, and by her it was founded. Brighit was she who never turned her mind or attention from the Lord for the space of one hour, but was constantly meditating and thinking of him in her heart and mind, as is evident in her own Life, and in the Life of St. Brenainn, Bishop of Cluain Fearta. She spent her time diligently serving the Lord, performing wonders and miracles, healing every disease and every malady, as her Life relates, until she resigned her spirit to heaven, the first day of the month of February; and her body was interred at Dun, in the same tomb with Patrick, with honour and veneration.

St Brigid's Day is #OTD. Brigid's actual existence is debated. She is given different birth and death dates. UCD-OFM MS A13, provides one of her death dates: 525. The full Irish text and translation may be found online as part of the CELT project (celt.ucc.ie).
