I have recently concluded that basically everything in Canada is better than in the US (except maybe winter). Maybe.
The ballots are always secret, but being a Democrat or a Republican is a matter of public record - at least in Florida.
What makes it more confusing-- each state has its own rules. So primary elections don't work the same way in other states.

In Florida voters vote for their candidate regardless of party

In Florida in 2020, for example, a Democrat would have first voted either for Joe Biden or one of the other Democrats running against him.
Separately, in 2020, a Republican would have voted either for Trump or one of the other Republicans running against him

For me, that and also non-political, completely made up things.
In Florida we do it in order to be able to vote in the primaries.
