I’m actually not.

I don’t support what we’re doing. I don’t support wars of aggression at all.

I continue to be disappointed literally every time I find out something new.

Because from my standpoint there was no reason to suspect.

It wasn’t until much MUCH later I stopped and thought about things “gun boat diplomacy” in real terms and was like “wait, what?”

Like I knew Gen Smedly Butler was a decorated Marine.

I did not know he became and anti-war activist or about the business plot until maybe a few years ago.

That’s literally nowhere in the curriculum.

Because idolized them. My hero as a kid was a Marine pilot. All I read was books about WWI aviation and WWII in the Pacific.

Because I didn’t view the US military as expansionist. I viewed it as a deterrent and I viewed the Marines as tactical offense against a strategic aggressor.

I don’t remember a culture of glorifying violence for violence’s sake.

I certainly didn’t enlist to be used in aggression. My view of military was based in the pacific naval WWII books I read.

I’m gonna go check out for a while and think/read more.

I realized I based my response on the very few people I still talk to.

That’s probably a poor basis for my assessment.

Also people here brought up more things here I’ve never heard of…

And we sank a frigate when we could have given it the opportunity to surrender… then bragged about it

Folks here are right in that it never occurred to me we might be acting in bad faith until late in my career.

I had no problem going up against officers if I thought there was a problem, but thinking about it I rarely saw anyone else do that. I made several enemies that way

I know the few people I was friends with and keep in contact with.

I’m chatting with two of them over how fucked up this is.

Although sleeping on it, I actually didn’t know many of the people I served with that well.

So really there’s little basis for my benefit of the doubt
