Hi! Thatβs a nice thread. And they certainly *can* enhance safety. But the evidence shows that a) they donβt always, and b) we donβt evaluate them enough to actually answer that question. My own thread on the science π bsky.app/profile/drky...
A nifty little summary of our #roadecology evdience synthesis: how well do wildlife crossing structures help animals across roads? ππ¨π¦‘π¦ transportecology.info/research/eff...
Thanks for sharing! This is something we can help look into. We have a report function on our website or you can reach out via DM β‘οΈ pesticideaction.org.au/report/
As to b) good question - see our recent article on some of the structural issues re. pesticide regulation in Australia β‘οΈ buff.ly/4gDhP30
It's an insecticide not a weed control. That's as much as I know so far. The company isn't answering the phone and I understand they're generally cagey about products (to paraphrase the website - 'it's safe unless you're a fish')
Just witnessed a local pest control company spray the outside of entire doublestorey house and garden - in 30km/h winds. Does anybody know a) what they typically use, and b) how on *earth* that's allowed?! They even blasted the shrubs in the garden and nature strip. ping @lizzylowe.bsky.social
Yes & no. There's @dianafisher1080.bsky.social's 2001 life-history database doi.org/10.1890/0012..., and we also developed parameter estimates for various marsupials (extinct & extant) here: doi.org/10.7554/eLif... (have a look at Appendix 2 in particular). But 'plug-in' values not straightforward
I do. Update used in this 2023 paper www.researchgate.net/publication/.... Much of the data are from my 2001 Ecology database or Comadre compadre-db.org/Data/Comadre @robsalgo.bsky.social. Now working on a global marsupial trait database (led by Mariana, Brazil www.researchgate.net/profile/Mari...).
Thanks! This looks great! I think Iβm just going to be out of luck with a few groups (eg melomys, uromys etc) and will probably struggle with survival estimates for many.
It's really astounding! And also kind of not surprising I suppose... My European co-authors haven't quite grasped the state of Aus wildlife data. "Just grab it from a closely related species!". Me, looking at an echidna... Thanks for the tips!
Hi #ausmammal crew. Do we have any kind of database of known survival rates or other demographic details for Australian mammals? e.g. the kind that could be plugged into a PVA? Trawling the literature isn't yielding much at the moment @euanritchie.bsky.social
Also, if anyone knows how to fix this, Iβm all ears! It seems to selectively ignore a) out of office replies (not such a loss), b) emails from people within my institution (kind of a big deal)
I was so impressed with the recent slow down in email traffic - until I realised that it was not, in fact, a change of work culture but rather that Gmail stopped retrieving 80% of my email from outlook π€¦π»ββοΈ Sorry if youβve emailed me recently! I didnβt see it. I * did* have a nice week though.
Thanks! Itβs in my signature but even close collaborators seem to β¦ overlook it. Iβve also blocked out my calendar on non-work days and yet meeting requests come through π€¦π»ββοΈ

I especially loved seeing the floating wetlands in the Yarra!
Congrats to @drkyliesoanes.bsky.social @jacintahumphrey.bsky.social and the whole team!

Non-traditional hours but that doesn't mean I expect others to do the same.
I find I don't say 'no' a lot. Rather I say 'I AM SO EXCITED BY THIS IDEA! These are the days I can work on this with you.'
The biggest problem I have is cross-over between roles. The boundary setting is harder, but..
I say "no." by saying "no" when needed I *become* a timelord.
I don't set out of office messages. that's for people who are expected to be available all the time. anyone who expects this is bonkers.
(as an old white dude I benefit from a lot of privilege when I do this...)
Some great tips coming through for managing expectations while working part-time
Hey fellow part-time academics! What are your tips on managing workloads and expectations on your time? Hoping to get better at this in 2025. Do you set out of office replies on non work days? Do you just say no a lot? or are you some kind of timelord? #academicmama #academicchatter
Sorry #ESAus2024, Iβve made a sneaky exit. Iβve got to get home to be yelled at by some tiny humans, er, I mean, parenting responsibilities. Thanks so much for having me. Youβve been swell. Get in touch!
OMG can we write a paper about tyre swan biodiversity?
The floating wetlands along a wetland offer cool habitats, but they're also a great way to get people noticing nature that was already there #ESAus2024 @drkyliesoanes.bsky.social
Thanks Dan!
π thanks so much!
A fantastic talk by @drkyliesoanes.bsky.social on urban biodiversity and working with practitioners. But more importantly a masterclass in how to deliver an engaging plenary #ESAus2024 #scicom
This is wonderful! Thanks so much!
