It was a real honour to be part of the African Union legal team before the ICJ in the advisory proceedings on States’ obligations related to climate change, under the leadership of Profs. Gueldich and Mbengue. On Dec 6th, the AU presented a powerful oral statement calling for climate justice.

We heard, from many States, compelling pleas for justice and accountability. Sadly, we also witnessed attempts by some nations to undermine human rights and climate accountability.

23/ 🌍African Union's Makane Mbengue concludes this week's hearings with a strong plea for #ClimateJustice, including by demanding the Court to consider debt cancellation, or at least debt relief, as a suitable form of restitution compensation and satisfaction.

I believe that there are no known precedents in ICJ advisory proceedings - it seems like a historical first for the Court (based on arts. 68+50 of the ICJ Statute). It is instead relatively ‘common’ in contentious proceedings.
Upon the invitation of the ICJ, a group of #IPCC scientists is meeting ICJ judges in The Hague today to enhance the Court’s understanding of the scientific findings of IPCC’s periodic assessment reports on climate change: ow.ly/NyK850Ufzhr
