Sidewalk on the west side of Nova Rd (Florida State Road 5A) in Daytona Beach with three lanes each way for cars.
This is the only road to the grocery store. Six lanes for cars, speed limit 50 mph, one sidewalk, 5 ft wide, only on one side of the road, for every one not in a car. In the middle of a city.
I am so happy that Liam is home!!!

FREE ALL THE CHILDREN caged in these horrifying detention centers⦠ABOLISH ICE!
Photo by Pierre Lavie. Yes this is me. And I threw my Leica. It landed on the bass plate with hardly a scratch. Another Photographer grabbed it along with my phone and I was able to track him later. I was held face down tear gas deployed right in front of me and pepper sprayed directly into the eye.
Map of the Netherlands that shows existing intercity routes (in green), planned and funded routes (in yellow), and routes now being planned for implementation (in gray) in the next 5 years.
The Dutch will double intercity bike routes in the next 5 years, from 1100 to 2300km.
Every city has local routes: Utrecht, for example, has 420km of separated bike lanes & bike streets. πΏπ€π€π§ππππ©π¨π§π€πͺπ©ππ¨ allow people to safety go by bike throughout NL.

Itβs easy to think that schools in Minneapolis are closed because the Feds murdered someone in the street but no, the actual reason is that while that was happening, the Feds were busy doing other heinous shit across the city like tear-gassing a school
NASAβs Largest Library Is Closing Amid Staff and Lab Cuts.
Just awful. I used this library between 1987 and 1992 as an intern in high school and college. All of building 21 is closing, where all my mentors had offices, where the International Ultraviolet Explorer was controlled from.
To close out a huge year, we are lifting the paywall on Episode 254 so that all can enjoy this comprehensive review of the data on the global energy transition with @ember-energy.org's @nicolasfulghum.bsky.social xenetwork.org/ets/episodes...

β¦ and Summer Streets in NYC in August was a blast. Car-free 5th Ave and others for more than 100 blocks!

Cool rainbow on my commute!

A model image for the rotationally distorted star gamma Cas as seen from Earth. A football-shaped star about 1.5 times wider than tall, with a hotter, brighter pole and a cooler, dimmer equator. The star is orientated such that that the visible hot pole is pointed to the southeast.

My first view of two-lane-wide bike lanes was on a visit to Portland, OR in 2017. Great to see this in NYC.
I love using my bike to take my other bike to the bike shop.
Cartoon: In the foreground, a character sits in a ladle outlined by stars (in the shape of the Big Dipper, the asterism in Ursa Major) sipping on a drink. In the background the Earth with the Moon beyond. The Earth has orbital path around it and two parabolic-shaped launch paths from the Florida peninsula.
From March 1, 1959: U-2 spy plane manual. Relax in the Big Dipper and watch the Space Race heat up. Not sure what this cartoon is doing in this manual. I looked at the manual while looking into the CIA-balloon film captured by the USSR to first image the farside of the Moon in 1958 (Luna III).

Great video on details of proportional ranked-choice voting using real ballots from the multi-seat race in Maine. From @lwvme.bsky.social. In Florida we really need multi-member districts for U.S. House so that more voters are represented by their choices. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oh32...
Another reminder that a 13-year study found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for all road users.
ALL ROAD USERS.
And painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all.
For sharrows, itβs actually safer to NOT have them.

For this cross walk pedestrians get a 7 second head start. Looking across the intersection, along the crosswalk you can see the signal head of the pedestrian signal. A cartoon bubble says "Walk sign in on". The left turn traffic in the background still have a red light, another cartoon bubble says "All red signals for 7 seconds".
This intersection has had a leading pedestrian interval since 2023 when the old crosswalk was less faded.
Looking east across the four-line arterial road Clyde Morris Blvd (SR 483) in Daytona Beach. The cross walk paint is just visible and badly needs to be repainted.
Same view across Clyde Morris Blvd after the crosswalk upgrade. Bright white bars and strips and a refreshed stop bar. Under the traffic light in the background you can just see the new crosswalk on another leg of the intersection.
Like night and day. FDOT comes through on request to upgrade crosswalks near campus. They added bars to the rungs on all three legs of the intersection.
