Thanks, David. I appreciate the thoughtful reading, especially knowing it isn't simple getting a copy to Beijing! πŸ™

@jeremyhawkins.bsky.social Enditem. (@downingfield.bsky.social , 2023). Hawkins took text he wrote as a journalist and put it through a series of techniques and strategies to arrive at a text that "makes apparent the constant violence of our political discourse." An effective and engaging work.

To be honest, I'm just deeply uninspired by any and all social media now, in this age of the digi-void techno-grift. No "good guy" social network is gonna cut it.

Poets: I'm trying to find a poet who recently wrote against dematerialisation or sublimation or abstraction in (lyric) poetry...

It was about not bowing to pressure to sublimate the violence of concrete reality into pretty abstractions (that's a bad paraphrase).

Help, please?

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS: Poetics of Place

I've joined the ed. board of @Writingplace_ & we're preping a special issue (#10) on poetics & place. We're keen to see work on how poetics & spatial practice meet, particularly from design perspectives. DMs open!

I’m extremely lucky in a lot of ways but it still makes me feel slightly insane sometimes as someone from a working class background when I find out that some successful writer or artist is an heir to a fortune or comes from a family background in what they do

Yessss! Can you imagine the horrible importance of importance? Like, every time you say anything it has an impact ON THE ART FORM?! Ugh.

What they don't tell you in American MFA programs (for the most part), is that being a minor poet is awesome.

But we were told it was a perfect hybrid of freedom and benevolence made manifest, virtually. How could that go wrong?

That "new" Beatles song just sounds expensive and forgettable, to be honest.

This isn't my field, really, but the ease with which a visiting person (bonus points if not fluent in the local languages) can urinate or defecate in security and legality should be a criteria by which we judge communities, and harshly. Looking at you, most of California!

The relief of coming to the end of an excellent but long (in time) academic reading (in this case Augustin Berque's Poetics of the Earth). Deep breath and back into the pile.

Buy books from small indie presses. Why? They can barely afford to publish the books, have little chance of getting readers’ attention as they can’t afford advertising campaigns & paid for promo partnerships, sales will probably be low & yet they believe in their books so much they do it anyway

Poetry scholars: I'm struggling to find again a reference I am *sure* I read somewhere about "unrepeatable" forms (rather than received or standard forms). I thought it was in Levertov's "Some Notes on Organic Poetry" but was mistaken. Do you know this notion?

We speculated when I was young that I was flat footed enough to avoid a hypothetical military conscription, but apparently not enough for even a single floy out of two.
