Damn. Saw them in Manchester a few years ago, great live band.
The qubit scale needed to solve real problems (read: substantially beyond classical limits) is phenomenally large. The number of gate operations is insane. The time needed to run each gate with error correction means it would take a few million years. Things must improve by many orders of magnitude.
Quantum computing most likely will never do this. Certainly not in our lifetime. Quantum secure communication, yes. Most other things proposed to be solved by quantum, no.
We will be holding a two-day conference on rare-earth science at @scienceanu.bsky.social in two weeks' time. In parallel we will have REECON+: a high level discussion on the future of global critical mineral value chains.

Herecy! Way easier to teach electronic structure with them, and don't forget magnets bro!
Congrats Bela!

DP outcomes. Congrats to those successful, commiserations to those unsuccessful.
Robson!! Get in!
We are delighted to invite you to our upcoming AMMA webinar, this time next Monday October the 13th at 12:00 Sydney time.

International PhD scholarship round for 2026 is open at ANU. Aspiring scholars with Masters degree, or equivalent (eg Australia/NZ Hons), interested in computational chemistry, quantum information, molecular spins, vibronic coupling, or something in that vein - get in touch!
I really don't get the capitalisation choice in any of his tweets. It's not even hitting the right emphasis words (eg ANY). I guess someone's PhD thesis Will be On this stuff.
A new βmolecular GPSβ method can help scientists see drug-binding interactions more clearly. Dr Martyna Judd says that understanding drug-protein interactions better can help optimise drug design and prevent side effects.

nothing would make me happier than US science returning to the amazing and transformational legacy of success and dominance
but if that's not possible, we need other places with the vision to take over as the pacesetter
humanity's long term success demands no less
Australia really does have a first-class science ecosystem - just on a small scale. Come make it bigger.

A novel dysprosium compound retains magnetic memory at 100K, the highest temperature for such materials. Its linear design could reduce the space needed for data storage. www.chemistryworld.com/news/linear-...
Yeah it's great. Deep fried haggis balls from a chippy are also fantastic
