UN Charter pledged us to save generations from scourge of war, defend human rights and justice.

Amid horror of El Fasher we must return to those words as rebuke for international failure, and challenge that world can do better.

The humanitarian crisis in #Sudan undoubtedly deserves urgent attention and international response. But we must not lose sight of the fact that it is an entirely man-made crisis - driven by conflict, violence and atrocities.

Accountability is essential and action is long overdue. #R2P 2/2

UN Mission Says Sudan Conflict Is A 'Crisis Of Humanity' A UN mission in Sudan on Tuesday described the situation in the war-torn country as "a crisis of humanity".

Too often, the focus on #Sudan centers only on the humanitarian situation - while grave human rights violations & #atrocities go overlooked.

But as @monarishmawi.bsky.social of the UN’s Fact-Finding Mission emphasized: Sudan “is not only a humanitarian crisis, but a crisis of humanity itself.“ 1/2

Sudan is facing brutal conflict, and indifference from the world.

Where is the funding?

Where is the accountability?

We call on all with influence to step up.

The 5 false assumptions embodied in the R2P project are:

➡ underestimating the complexity of mass atrocity prevention
➡ overestimating constraints to R2P
➡ believing there would be a consensus over existing crimes
➡ believing states would reconstruct national interests
➡ misjudging regional action

30.04.2025 14:00 👍 0 🔁 1 💬 1 📌 0

The 4 developments urging us to question whether R2P is ‘dead’ are:

➡ changing world order & implications for all human rights norms
➡ language shift away from R2P
➡ resistance to R2P within the UN
➡ lack of R2P leadership

30.04.2025 14:00 👍 0 🔁 1 💬 1 📌 0

⚖ The R2P norm death narrative is problematic for both critics and defenders of the norm. Critics create an overly high benchmark against which to measure the norm, allowing defenders to dismiss its death with relative ease.

30.04.2025 14:00 👍 0 🔁 1 💬 1 📌 0

🤔 How do we know when a norm is dead? Much of the existing literature discusses how norms are made as opposed to ‘norm death.’

Gallagher addresses this gap by analysing R2P from a norm death perspective.

R2P was born as the world watched the genocide in #Darfur unfold. 20 yrs later, it’s happening again.

Int'l engagement in #Sudan, shaped by deals with those committing #atrocities, is reinforcing the very violence R2P was meant to prevent.

The international community must not allow this crisis to escalate unchecked. #R2P

On day 3 of the onslaught, Zamzam IDP Camp is now under RSF control.

Mass exodus of civilians from the camp, and mass killings of those trying to escape.
