'The Octopus', a 23-line poem by Judith Beveridge that describes the moment the poet witnesses a fisherman hook an octopus, treating it with disdain, tossing it to his mate who 'props it on his head like a court jester'. The poet doubts they 'considered its pain...or thought about its nine brains firing with action potential...so much fear spiking through its body...when no cloak of ink could make it disappear'.
'I hurry along the pier to tell the fisherman the octopus/has three hearts, nine brains, that it solves problems,/uses tools...'
