They’ve become common inland. And plumage varies quite a lot according to age – adults generally darkest but with that white patch around the beak, and younger birds often have quite extensive white patches.
It’s a cormorant.

Some might be. It takes between four and six weeks, I think (but depending on where they’re going to, of course - I’m in London, and the influx in southern England is usually first/second week of May, but there’s usually a handful of early arrivals starting mid-April or thereabouts.

Brideshead suffers from the terrible disease of religious earnestness (other opinions are, as always, available). I love it, but suspect that’s because of indoctrination (A-level set text, coupled with the BBC adaptation). I think I prefer acerbic, witty Waugh.
