Too often, people say things like "Place X could have been like Singapore" or "Place X could've been the Singapore of the region."
But these same people invariably go on to say the most ignorant or hateful things.

Enforced disappearances, systematic use of torture (including sexual violence against male detainees), prolonged detentions of civilians, and "kill not capture" policy enacted against soldiers.
These are crimes against humanity. These are the actions of Russian troops.

Headteacher Katharine Birbalsingh tweeting "ethnics can not be English". Few white headteacher would make sweeping racially exclusive comments.
Her belief every single ethnic minority person identifies as "British not English" is a sincere misperception, but educators could look at the evidence!
I'm neither English nor British, so I don't get a say in defining these terms. However, as a Singaporean, I'd like to remind my friends engaging in this debate that implementing policies that foster intercommunal harmony is more important than debating nonmenclature.
there is a growing list of programs for the disabled they've been attacking and cutting. Of the many things to be alarmed about, this is one of the most alarming. Trump is a big eugenics believer and I can see him looking to shove the disabled aside and out of sight.
Indeed. No one ever thought that this has to be spelt out quite this plainly. But in an age where misinformation and disinformation run rampant, it is only right that Grieve and others state this position clearly.
Everyone knows the impending Election had some impact on the Budget. However, given that inflation is (as a result of everything else being) imported into Singapore, the Gov has little choice but to provide targeted relief, particularly to the middle class, young families, and senior citizens.
What a joy for @mohusseini.com and I to screen The Path Forward at @weareikar.bsky.social and have deep healing convo with Rabbi @sharonbrous.bsky.social. Thanks to Aziza Hassan for introducing.
Great photo! Enjoy your time in Mexico!
Somewhere over Oregon and headed to Mexico for beach time with the brilliant Ms Larson.
Something Iβve been working on in my hobby time this year: βAcademia: the board gameβ. You play until one player is promoted to emeritus, or all players burn out and leave academia. Or you can see who survives 4 terms (sorry, βproductivity cyclesβ) and tally victory points on your career plan.
Forgive, but never forget.
As an American, Iβm ashamed.
As a Jew, Iβm appalled.

Grimes was completely correct to object to her son being put on the spot in that manner.
Thank you for sharing this, @rimaanabtawi.bsky.social.
Good for Grimes. Children are not props.
The mother of Elon Muskβs four-year-old son criticized his inclusion in an Oval Office press conference Tuesday with his father and Donald Trump.

This is the key and what GOP/Trump have done. "Woke" was not an issue or much of a concern until they decided to make it that way. And "Critical Race Theory" before that. They do it ALL THE TIME and we do not. No idea why.
Trump will tell you that his relentless efforts to ban trans athletes from competition are about βprotectingβ women and girls. But his entire approach to policy making shouts otherwise.
My examination of that:

People who say don't take this seriously are wrong. A man who is sending 30k migrants to Guantanamo, and many more to Salvadorian prisons is MORE than willing to find a place to 'move' Palestinians, even if every Arab state won't.
He and his developer pals stand to make BILLIONS. He's serious.
42 years ago today, right-wing extremist Yona Avrushmi murdered activist Emil Grunzweig during a Peace Now demonstration.
If Emil were alive today, he would be marching to end the war and bring every hostage home.

Many have correctly noted that forced transfer/deportation is a war crime & crime against humanity.
On βvoluntariness,β it bears emphasizing that the forced nature of transfer can be established where the perpetrators take advantage of a coercive environment that precludes genuine choice.
Can Israel legally "cede" Gaza to the United States? I keep getting this question. The answer is categorically and unequivocally no!
The idea of (non forced) "voluntary displacement" of Palestinians is absurd
- no factual evidence that any/some/many want to be resettled
- 2 million people do not have homogenous preferences π€―π€―π€―
- "forced" does not have to mean bombed out of their houses

Yes, I agree. The whole point of the deterrence effect of criminal law is to prevent bad things from happening before they happen.
And, sometimes, "want to" may be enough to incur legal liability.
I understand that. I think this is simply a situation where one keeps the audience and object of the argument in mind. If the point is to identify possible international crimes, I think precision is key. In that specific context, I would not use the phrase "ethnic cleansing". Hope this clarifies.
