White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt gets multiple questions about whether Trumpβs federal aid freeze impacts Medicaid, which provides health insurance to ~72 million in the U.S.
Sheβs unsure, says she will check on that βand get back to you.β
Look, whether or not this β probably, though I am not a lawyer, unlawful β βpauseβ applies to Medicaid or not, it is conspicuous, unsurprising, and NEWSWORTHY that the memo explicitly stipulates that it βshould not be construed to impactβ Medicare or Social Security but Medicaid goes unmentioned.
80 million people in the United States count on #Medicaid for critical, lifesaving health care, including cancer screenings and treatment. (1/2)
Huge huge newsβ Tim Kaine just passed one of the big pediatric cancer research bills, Jennifer Wextonβs Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act 2.0, by unanimous consent!
It already passed in the House so it will become law with the Presidentβs signature! This is so great!!!

With a number of cancers that still don't have reliable early detection tools, exciting to see Congress come together to prioritize a pathway to coverage of innovation in multi-cancer early detection. Willing Congress to finish the job and pass the year-end CR in short order!

Children/seniors facing delays in access to care and potentially large medical bills because Georgia's Pathways program has snarled the system in more red tape
A reminder that Pathways is Gov Kemp's alternative to ACA Medicaid expansion; its only covering c 5k people

So important to watch out for.
Theyβve learned trying a full repeal is too unpopular, so theyβll try to sneak it through in massive funding cuts.
Stay focused!
ACS CAN has fought big tobacco, worked to expand insurance access, sought coverage for biomarker tests in states across the country, and advocated for cancer research funding. If you believe in this work, please consider supporting our work on this #GivingTuesday
This this this! Healthy parents (with lower medical debt and more household income) mean healthy kids and families!
The 5 states with the largest number of dual Medicare-Medicaid beneficiaries are:
California 1.565 million
New York 986K
Florida 928K
Texas 747K
Pennsylvania 485K
If a cap is imposed on Medicaid these Medicare beneficiaries are in trouble. And with an aging population states are at huge risk.
Andrew was an incredible advocate and wonderful person. It was heartbreaking π
Medicaid is health insurance but it's also economic security. Medicaid means less medical debt, higher household incomes, and the effects go on. To be here in 2024 reading about plans to cut Medicaid after an "economic" election is fundamentally disorienting. Opponents of Medicaid are out of touch.
The big three public health programs, Medicaid, Medicare and the Marketplace ACA subsidies are lifting about 39 million people out of poverty.

With talk of Republicans planning to target Medicaid, a reminder of what's at stake and why you shouldn't be fooled by promises that vulnerable groups can be protected from cuts. My latest @opinion.bsky.social (gift link):
Bryceβs reporting is consistently excellent. These stories are heartbreaking π
Medicaid is the reason that my amazing disabled daughter is able to live at home with her family instead of being institutionalized in a medical facility. This is personal; it's what got me involved in health care advocacy in 2017 and it's what I will be focused on in 2025.

On transgender day of remembrance, it's a good time to revisit the KFF/Washington Post Trans Survey. While policies that affect trans people are often the subject of political discussion, few surveys have been able to provide the perspectives of trans people themselves:

A work requirement for Medicaid would be a big deal.
Capping federal spending on Medicaid, converting it to a block grant to states, or eliminating enhanced federal payments for the ACA Medicaid expansion would be an even bigger deal.
I agree. My other optimism is those House members from NY, NJ, AZ and CA who want to have a prayer of winning their next electionβ¦plus governors!
Not really a question of whether Trump and Republicans will go after Medicaid and the ACA
Itβs a question of how aggressively β and what kind of political opposition might stop them www.huffpost.com/entry/health...
