A Green Jay is perched on a bent metal rod with its back to the camera and its head to the side. The bird has a light electric blue head with black mask and neck. The body is an electric lime green and the tail is an electric blue green. This electric bird should probably not be sitting on a metal rod. I kid.

A Little Blue Heron in hunkered down in pond vegetation on a cold, windy day. The hair on its head is raised up in a crest due to the wind blowing from behind. The bird is standing in profile, clearly showing off its two-toned bill, dark at the end and light toward the face. The plumage doesn't show as blue, but more of a slate gray on the body and a lavender gray on the head and neck. During breeding season and in the right light, blue herons can look very blue.

A shoveler is standing in very shallow water with his back to the camera but his head turned so that his big beautiful shovel beak can be seen in profile. He is surrounded by dormant vegetation. The light is hitting him on one side so that his deep emerald green head and neck feathers show as well as his golden eye. The body is white and honey brown and the wings and tail are black with white markings. His legs are bright orange. To his right, almost completely out of frame, you can see just a bit of his mate. She is mostly brown and buff and much less flashy than the male.

I'm going for a twofer today. Personally, I think this Northern Shoveler is quite photogenic. And I like the interplay of light and shadow as well. #YMMV #AnahuacNWR February 2026

It's really well done, but I know a lot of the subtext was over my head. Stuff like that sometimes puts me off, but it wasn't pretentious, just multi-layered.

Some of the male hooded orioles in South Texas are almost as orange as this, but the wing is different. It took me a while to differentiate them, but they are both gorgeous!! (And thank you!!)

A mostly bright orange oriole is perched on a branch with head turned toward the camera to give the photographer a little side-eye. The orange plumage is accented by a black mask, neck, upper back and tail. The wings are black with white accents. The background is blurred greenery, including some green leaves that look like the feathery ferny leaves of a mimosa tree.

A Limpkin is shown with it bill inside an apple snail, trying to get the meat out. An American Coot is off to the side, looking in the direction of the Limpkin. They are both on an island of lake vegetation with lake water in the rear of the photo.

This is a very monochromatic photo with the bird all greyish and brownish against a jumble of bare gray branches. The heron is perched in profile on a branch and its bill is wide open. This bird was talking a lot and loudly.
This anhinga was either a female or an immature bird and sported tan and brown plumage. It is perched on a bare branch over brown lake water and has its head raised and turned to the side with its bill wide open.

I had to hit the archives for this theme so I picked two from March 2025. A juvenile Yellow-Crowned Night Heron at #BrazoriaNWR and an Anhinga at #BrazosBendSP. They both had things to say!

A young cormorant sits in profile on a pile of dormant grasses with a pond in the background. The plumage is mostly brown; it will be mostly black when its adult plumage comes in. The bird has a long bill with a hook at the end, a blue eye and orange skin behind the bill. That orange skin is arrow shaped where it terminates, helping to identify it as a neotropic cormorant. Double-crested cormorants have that same yellow skin, but its termination is more squared off.
