The best time to shift spending away from Amazon is right now. The next best time is tomorrow. If you're first reaction to the action is "Why should I boycott Amazon?" I implore you, take a few minutes to find some answers. Because the answers are there. And you have other options.

A beautiful piece on the criminalisation of bookselling, by publisher Simon Liebesny

This description of evacuating a literary archive from Kharkiv after the Russian invasion could be straight out of @richove.bsky.social's Burning the Books
The Israeli authorities must release Mahmoud Muna and Ahmad Muna immediately. There is no justification for their arrest or continued detention. The charges against them are fabricated and malicious, and the manner of their arrest – an undercover raid on a reputable bookselling business established more than forty years ago, followed by handcuffing and many hours of interrogation and detention – is reprehensible. This illegitimate act marks yet another escalation in the suppression by Israeli authorities of the rights and freedoms of the people of Jerusalem. The world has seen the nature of regimes that arrest and imprison booksellers before. The fact that my government in the UK, among others, persists in supporting, defending, encouraging and arming such a regime continues to be a source of profound shock and dismay. The time is long past for Britain and the international community to reassess its backing for Israel, and to condition any future support on the active and immediate dismantling of structures of oppressive control. I am proud to call Mahmoud and Ahmad friends. Both have been a source of strength and professional support to me, and Mahmoud and I have worked together, travelled together and shared a stage together before public audiences over many years. I have nothing but respect and admiration for the work they do in preserving, promoting and championing Palestinian literary culture in Jerusalem. Criminalising booksellers has no place in a democracy. In solidarity with Mahmoud Muna, Ahmad Muna and their families and supporters, I call on the Israeli authorities to release them immediately. My statement on the arrest and detention of Mahmoud Muna and Ahmad Muna:
This is horrifying. We call for the immediate release of our fellow booksellers Mahmoud and Ahmad.

Our Book & Bottle book of the month for January is Wild Houses by Colin Barrett. I’ve brought it on a long weekend in Anglesey with the intention of smashing the whole thing in. Haven’t even looked at the first page yet. Plenty of time though. Copies in the shop if you want one!

Reading a physical book bought from a local independent store is an act of resistance in 2025. Apple, Meta, and Amazon all desperately need your screen time. Start denying them some of it.

A very complex diagram which begins with the question "Do you need a a gift for someone" but, despite many questions and choices, always suggests either giving a book or buying a book for yourself, or gets in a huff and says "I give up!".
A helpful gift shopping algorithm that I made for @theguardian.com a couple of years ago.

The people who say that, “kids don’t read anymore” have no concept of the GRIP manga has on my son’s elementary school. Librarian can’t keep them on the shelves. The kids who can buy them pass them around like bottles of moonshine during prohibition. It’s GLORIOUS.
