He doesn't ask why not, and I don't elaborate. Anything else we could say right now would be pointless. We're obviously not mortal ene-mies. But the more we say, the harder it is to take it back. The less likely we'll be able to part with our dignity intact. Because eventually, this will be over. Three weeks to be exact. We don't talk about it, but the outcome looms bigger each day: whether I'll get a parting text, whether we'll even bother saying goodbye.
I love a messy pair that has work to figure each other out and dig through all of the layers to connect. This was one of my favorite sections of the book to write, and I hope it speaks to you, too!
