After having defenseman Jackson Smith taken 14th overall for the first ever first round selection of the Penn State Hockey team, they’re on track to potentially have their first ever No. 1 pick. This might be the most anticipated Penn State athletic year of my lifetime.

This is another example as to why the pitcher’s win-loss record in the most irrelevant stat in baseball.
Three teams have won the Stanley Cup from a no state income tax state since 2020 (TB, FLA, and VGK). However, Dallas hasn’t won a cup since 1999, and Nashville has only been to a Final. Seattle has won only one playoff series. The Panthers just run their organization well.

I didn’t say he should in this post. I walked that back after Game 4 after snapping the losing skid. I mentioned while there’s a fair argument given the struggles at this point in the postseason, I gave two big reasons why now isn’t the time. The contract and the streak being broken.
Fair argument that Rod should be done as Canes head coach today. However, they did win a game in the Eastern Conference Final for the first time since 2006, and he just signed a 5-year contract last year.
Carolina barring the most epic comeback possible will lose their 15th straight Eastern Conference Final game tonight. Rod Brind’Amour was either a player or coach for each of the 15 games.
If they get swept I don’t see how Canes owner Tom Dundon can justify keeping Brind’Amour. Feels like he’s heading towards the same territory Sully was with the Penguins at this rate unless they win a game or two.
It’s one thing for the Canes to lose the series, but if they get swept again, Brind’Amour should be looking for a new job. I don’t see how Dundon can justify bringing him back unless they win a game or two this series.
A lot of baseball still left and yes, this was the first series for Don Kelly as manager. But, if this is any indication, there’s a chance that the rest of the Pirates season could be entertaining. Maybe not the best record, but at the very least entertaining.
1-0 pitch in the 8th to Gorski is another example as to why ABS Review is coming to MLB. Pitch called a strike by the umpire when the pitch is clearly in the other batter’s box.
The sooner Endy Rodriguez can return to the lineup, the better it will be for Henry Davis and the Pirates. He needs to get away from the majors for his own development at this point.
Jake Oettinger meanwhile should have caught the attention of USA Hockey for the Olympics given how much Hellebuyck has been beat up by the Blues
And after this, I believe Jared Bednar should be on the hot seat entering next season for the Avalanche.
Miko Rantanen meanwhile just made Chris MacFarland look bad for trading him. Not only does he trade him away, he ends up watching him eliminate the Avalanche with the period of his life.
Over the course of the season there are moments where you’ll remember that as the moment they showed why they’re champions. If the Stars win the Cup, this third period is theirs. They looked like they were done after falling behind 2-0.
As Dubas mentioned, this is a team in transition as the core prepares for retirement in the seasons to come. While they have the pre to work with, they too, need to play a role in this. I also don’t see this change happening unless they are convinced it’s the right thing to do.
A new voice could be good for this group to help forge the next era of the team along with the core. Sully is a great coach and will probably get interest this offseason elsewhere, potentially with a contender.
Both will be appreciated for their efforts in winning their respective Stanley Cups. This team shouldn’t have gone this long without winning a playoff series (much like the Steelers should’ve won at least 1-2 playoff games since 2016).
The decision to move on from Mike Sullivan was necessary for the future of the Penguins. Like Dan Bylsma before him, every coach has an end date. Both of them are great coaches and like Dan, Sully reached the end point for his time in Pittsburgh.
And remember what Cherington said last year at the season ending press conference. He said they’re accountable together. That probably means both go at the same time if a move is made. This is year 6. This is the year GMNH fielded his first playoff team.
There’s still a lot of baseball left in this season. However, the very early returns aren’t good for Cherington and Shelton. Injuries certainly have impacted this, too. But there’s every reason to be concerned about where things are at this point for this team.
