We didn't get a VCR until I was 9 but I did have access to kids' novelizations, including Congo, so my first impression of the movie was a straightforward prose telling of the things that happened in it.

One of my favorites is how Frank Nelson's character on The Jack Benny Program has outlived Benny himself in cultural consciousness as a character on The Simpsons that no one remembers is even parodying anything.
I'm never clear on how much of this is historical accident based on the war shaping a worldwide narrative versus the people who say it in ways I can hear being primarily anglophone.
