"Renee was one of the kindest people Iβve ever known,β her mother said. βShe was extremely compassionate. Sheβs taken care of people all her life. She was loving, forgiving and affectionate. She was an amazing human being.β www.startribune.com/she-was-an-a...
Absolutely. It's a tad finicky, but once you've done it a few times it's pretty easy, and it's super doable for a home cook without a dish pit.
Also, surprisingly easy to make dairy-free and still be good.
I made a crab and oyster mushroom risotto a while ago that went really hard
Oh hell yeah
Sometimes you aren't as good and your effort isn't enough. Sometimes other people just have deep-rooted advantages over you based on genetics and nurture. You gotta get over it.
Being mediocre at sports, working very hard in high school, and still not getting much playing time was a valuable if very tough life lesson that more people should learn.
Really it's Tims and that about it.
And I know I have another Jewish fantasy in the lineup at @kaleidotrope.bsky.social at some point this year. Really looking forward to all of you meeting my noir detective/trickster hero.
Second, my beloved David and Goliath retelling "Giant of the Stars" was reprinted in Year's Best Canadian Fantasy and Science Fiction Vol. 3.
I didn't publish much this year, but what I did get through, I'm very proud of.
First, this summer, I had a dark fantasy flash story, "We Few, We Happy Few" in the inaugural issue of @goblins-galaxies.bsky.social.
TWO: "Gifted and Talented" in Small Wonders.
"In the space under space, where matter slips and we pull ships sharp-tug through the back veins of the universe faster than lightβfaster than we are supposed toβtime is a deadly thing."
I published TWO (2) stories this year and I'm gonna share them and you should read them because they are good. Also they'd be great to think about for awards and whatnot. π€·
ONE: "Chickenfoot Soup" in Lightspeed. Katarina's got a mean momma and a silly daughter but Baba Yaga is here to help.
Food, I think. Millennials really pushed the boat out there.
All of the people who love to crow about βreligious freedomβ when itβs about refusing to bake cakes for gay couples, are going to be conspicuously silent about this one.
All contexts. It's all contexts.
As a special holiday treat, my poem "The World To Come" is out today at @strangehorizons.bsky.social !

A Black woman with pale white curly hair is wearing a blue dress. She is framed by purple and green stained glass of lotus flowers behind her.
I want to do more cover art in 2026, so I'm going to be insufferable about mentioning that from now on. Commissions OPEN.
Would really like to start writing more historical horror/dark fantasy outside of the standard time periods.
This is a horror and also like twelve different story seeds.

On the other hand, conchiglie are incredible and underrated.
And if I wanted rice but with wheat, I'd eat farro, which answers the question "what if brown rice was supposed to taste like that?"
Get out of here with orzo. If I wanted rice I would just eat rice.
Much as you want a backyard for a garden, I want one for smoke-based cooking.
Best SFF of the year, Elbows Up edition!
Contains "The World in Our Hands" by Sophie Gazarian from FF#22, plus work by FF staffers @pbarmby.bsky.social and @arielmarkenjack.bsky.social, and lots of other incredible Canadian writers!
"Giant of the Stars" is a subversive science fantasy-tinged retelling of David and Goliath with ancient aliens, the sedimentary layers of historic crimes, and a reasonable amount of longing. It's my most submitted story and one I'm very proud of.
Proud to have a story in this. βBright Horizonsβ is an SF cautionary tale about AI in education. Itβs just one of many great stories by Canadians. Youβll definitely want to add this book to your collection.
