Photograph of the Obelisk on James st. Dublin with a quote from James Connolly: "To permanently remedy the evils of city life the citizens must own their city." A black and white image of Connolly overlooks the obelisk.
Really taken with the sundial fountain on James St, which was a meeting place for radicals in the city for decades, including Connolly and Larkin. Playing around with ways to incorporate it into radical education today.

- AI training isn’t ‘learning’ and shouldn’t be treated as such
The House of Lords has been absolutely consistent on this, and they are totally right. Will the government listen?

The Housing Minister & council officials are not just "off to the Riviera," they're off to the MIPIM - a global real estate event.
Less than a week after the lifting of the rent caps, they are off to tell the vulture funds that it's time to "drill baby drill" in Ireland's rental market.

New film documents Dubliners’ resistance to subordination of social life to profit

I review the 50th edition of Saothar in History Ireland, and so get to respond to Shay Cody's article that James Connolly served in India and Egypt and that I may be "wrong" in my analysis and research. This is me giving him the gentlest of taps; I really could have gone to town on it.

Marxism can still change the world
I have spent my life interpreting capitalism in order to build an alternative
Problems have solutions. Contradictions do not. They are permanent points of tension that can only be managed within the system in which they are embedded. They only go away when the system as a whole disappears.

And Connolly citing Mark Twain is always good to see. It's just so nice to be finally on top of the publishing schedule so I can chase up little nuggets like these.

Probably not, but it's definitely something I'd love to know, so I spent about an hour this morning chasing up the official weather stats and reports for August 1899.

Sometimes you footnote just for yourself. Does the average reader really need to know the context for Connolly's comment on the weather?

It means I can really delve into his writing - which corresponds with the period covered by Joyce in Dubliners, Portrait, and Ulysses.
Anyways, the quote here is from an article on imperialist war and capitalism. That's the thing about Connolly, he's so out of date. An anachronism really...

On top of this I have found a number of lost letters and articles, all of which will be going in.
but it's the footnoting that I'm enjoying the most - mainly because I have the breathing space to do one article a day as this volume isn't until next year.

It's also one of the most intense periods in terms of his research, analysis and activism - and remains one of the most neglected.
For example, 49 articles from this period are currently on the Marxist Internet Archive Connolly page - there are at least 100 articles alone in existence.

Now that vol. II is with @iskrabooks.bsky.social for publication I feel like I'm finally catching up with the schedule and getting on top of things.
Really enjoying editing the next collection - vol. III (1898-1899) - which contains the first two years of his journalism in Ireland.
