Contrary to Ilan Wurman’s absurd position, England did have searchers at ports. However, these agents of the state were more about keeping peopleβ€” and bullionβ€” in the realm; not keeping anyone out. People generally flowed pretty freely into England for centuries. It’s just more ahistorical nonsense.

Softerware Keep your Claude skills loose for better performance

A bit about a pattern I've been seeing in how ordinary people are using coding tools in probably unproductive ways. If you are new to coding, you may thing the problem you want to solve is build more things. The reality is you want to build *less* things.

DC folks actually sort of need to demand that heads roll over this. It’s a real problem if law enforcement in the capital is so pathetic, weak, and supine that their instinct is to act as stormtroopers for illicit federal power grabs.

This data consolidation is in flagrant violation of the Privacy Act of 1974, and the way ICE is using it for political and racial repression is the nightmare scenario of the people who drafted that law 5 decades ago.

The technology of surveillance is … like it says, the technology of surveillance. When governments can pay to tap into corporate webs of surveillance, what results differs little from a surveillance network under direct government control.

Social media created this nonsense idea that not exposing yourself to hatred is isolationist. Choosing to not spend your free time with bigots isn’t living in a bubble. I don’t need to know what’s going on at X. I won’t be smarter or more knowledgeable or empathic by being there. Neither will you.

Some cities are ditching license plate readers over immigration surveillance concerns Cities around the country are debating whether to keep their automatic license plate readers. Concerns about privacy and federal immigration agents can access local data are driving these debates.

Another example of why I hate so much the folks who tell us this stuff is inevitable.

It doesn’t have to be this way!

Often when communities see the stakes, they reject ubiquitous surveillance.
