Republicans arguing that the war with Iran isn't a war sound a lot like Russians saying that the war with Ukraine isn't a war, just a "special military operation".
Then they should ask Lybians how that worked out for them after Col. Gaddafi's regime fell. Then they should ask Iraquis how that worked out after Hussein's regime fell. Regime change rarely ends the way Washington wants.
Then Trump can conjure up a scenario of attacks coming from Iranians in Mexico and Cuba to force the changes to election rules he wants so he can leave his fingerprints all over the ballots and their counting.
I think there's more to it than an excuse to bolster ICE. I'm worried Trump will use fighting as the excuse for the "emergency" he wants to use to rig the midterms. As long as there are elements of the Revolutionary Guard in fighting condition they can maintain a guerilla campaign indefinitely.
