left: The sepals now visible, petals are turning pink. Stigma cloose to maturity and viability at this point. Still very cold hardy. Right: in all its glory, the dark-purple-pink petals are now fully extended, revealing the sanctum sanctorum of the flower; the stigma and pistils. Note the green stigmas are ripe and ready for pollen, yet the flower's own pollen-producing pistils are still tightly bound and white (the orb-like structure in the middle). This prevents self-pollination. The flower is no longer frost-hardy at this point. Here two stages are present, ripe pollen (right) and greenbud (left). Note ripe white pollen grains inside flower on right. Photo taken April 10 at author's grove in Louisville, KY In this final stage, the pollen shed stage, the stigmas are no longer viable and not able to receive pollen, and the pistils are now full of ripe pollen. See the whitish pollen grains? This is what you collect for hand-pollination. The petals will often start to brown or appear wilted at this stage

hey kid..... wanna see how to pollinate a pawpaw?
You're a beautiful literary writer and it's tragic that you have to make up your own beautiful literary world but that's where we are
