It was truly humbling to receive the Black History Month Trailblazer honor from my friends at the Chelsea Black Community (CBC). The CBC serves as a model for lifting up our neighbors with inclusive programming and meaningful partnerships.

We discussed our priorities for this committee, highlighted each chamber's priorities and our collective agreement to reconcile the differences between our two bills methodically and efficiently.
It was my pleasure to host the first conference committee meeting on my #EarlyLiteracy bill as Senate Chair alongside the House Conference Committee Chair, State Rep. Ken Gordon.
My staff and Rep. Decker's staff spoke at length about the Massachusetts Poverty Commission process and methods, how the Commission came to be, and how this report can make its way through the legislature. I want to thank Sam Gebru for hosting this great seminar and inviting my team to speak.
The Seminar participants were community-based advocates and practitioners who wanted to better understand how the legislative process actually works in practiceβespecially the critical role staff play behind the scenes.
Last week, my Chief of Staff, Christie Getto Young, and my Legislative Director, Ayla Thorntona, spoke at a Tufts Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) panel about the Poverty Commission Report I co-led with Representative Marjorie Decker.

Working with our House colleagues, I know we will come to a final resolution that ensures all our children learn to read and write and get the bright futures they deserve.
I am proud to lead the conference committee negotiations from the Senate on my #EarlyLiteracy bill which has been approved by the Senate and House with slightly different language.

S.2947, An Act regarding fair housing practices in the Commonwealth, takes aim at discrimination in the housing market by mandating fair housing training for all real estate agents and strengthening state enforcement of fair housing law.
S.2945, An Act modernizing protections for consumers in automobile transactions, will lengthen the stateβs Lemon Law timeline, giving customers who purchase a new or used vehicle seven days after receiving delivery of the auto to void the sale if the vehicle fails to pass inspection.
Recently, I took action alongside my Senate colleagues to increase access to housing and expanding the stateβs car buyer protection law for people who buy new and used vehicles.

I had the pleasure of attending The Greater Boston Food Bank's official launch of The Center for Community Health and Nutrition in Boston. This massive accomplishment demonstrates the Food bank's commitment to health, nutrition equity, and community wellness.

Despite all of the challenges and racism he has faced in his life, Woodhouse has always treated everyone with kindness and respect. He has held his head up high in spite of these injustices and is still proud to be an American. Woodhouse just turned 99 last month, and is an inspiration to us all.
Later, he opened a private law practice in Boston in 1960. He has since received many prestigious awards, including the Congressional Gold Medal from President George W. Bush in 2007.
After the war, Woodhouse studied German, French, and math at Yale University and attended Boston University Law School. After he graduated in 1955, he served as a US diplomatic courier in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and South America.
He attended Boston English High, joining the ROTC, and before he graduated in 1944, he enlisted on his 17th birthday. He was considered too young to serve in combat, so he was sent to finance school and became a finance officer for the Tuskegee Airmen.
Born in Roxbury on January 14th, 1927, Woodhouse aspired to become a teacher, however after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 Woodhouse decided to enlist to serve his country.
I had the pleasure of meeting him at an event last year and it was an honor to speak with such a distinguished person with an illustrious life.
In our next installment celebrating some of our most accomplished and impactful Black leaders throughout Massachusetts history, meet Brigadier General Enoch OβDell βWoodyβ Woodhouse II, a retired WW2 veteran and one of the last surviving Tuskegee Airmen who calls Boston his home.

She was later inducted into the Nursing Hall of Fame in 1976 and the National Womenβs Hall of Fame in 1993. The American Nurses Associationβs Mary Mahoney Award continues to honor leaders who advance diversity and inclusion in the profession. Her grave in Everett, MA, now serves as a memorial site.
Beyond her clinical work, Mahoney was a strong advocate for racial equity and womenβs rights. In 1908, she co-founded the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses to support Black nurses who were excluded from professional organizations.
At a time when racial and gender discrimination limited access to professional education, she persevered and set a new standard of excellence in nursing.
In 1879, Mahoney became the first Black professionally trained nurse in the United States after completing the rigorous nursing program at the New England Hospital for Women and Children.
For our next installment of celebrating some of our most accomplished and impactful Black leaders throughout Massachusetts history, meet Mary Eliza Mahoney, a trailblazing nurse born and raised in Dorchester, Massachusetts.

Her legacy is honored in Cambridge through the Maria L. Baldwin School & the Maria Baldwin House, a designated National Historic Landmark. These memorials serve as living testaments to an African American Cantabrigian whose leadership shaped education and justice for generations.
