Great interview questions @lseconsulting.bsky.social!
Thanks to @lseconsulting.bsky.social for putting this together!
What motivated our director to study animal minds - and when you make evidenceβbased recommendations, what shifts first: public understanding, industry standards, or policy?

Thanks for sharing this. Transparency is vital for informed decisionβmaking. Research shows pigs are highly sentient and intelligent, and evidenceβbased welfare standards should reflect the science
What can hedgehogs hear? π¦

Researchers have found hedgehogs hear far beyond the human range - opening up future possibilities like using targeted sound to help keep them away from roads.
Thanks for sharing the worldwide picture. We hear from lawyers that even as the science and policy on sentience move forward, enforcement in practice remains a real challenge

Evidence of octopus sentience is landing in policy. Mexico has proposed a national ban on octopus farming, joining Chile and California in moving away from the practice.
Insectβfarming ventures are collapsing just as evidence of insect sentience accelerates - raising big questions for the future of food systems.

The latest on live boiling in the UK: despite growing evidence of sentience and policy shifts acknowledging it, the practice continues. Researchers, NGOs and legal experts are working together to close the gap between science, policy and practice.

Great opportunity for anyone interested in a PhD at the intersection of philosophy, animal welfare, public policy, and sentience research π
A wonderfully thoughtful reflection on how historical understandings of the ocean can inform our present - and help shape a better future - relationship with it (and its inhabitants)

Expert bodies already call for major meat reductions due to risks to the climate, biodiversity, antimicrobial resistance and zoonotic disease - yet no vet association has set quantified targets. He argues this gap risks undermining the profession and raising doubts about its independence.
Check out the latest article by our Research Fellow in Veterinary Policy, Dr Steven McCulloch, making the case that vets must advocate for a 50% meatβreduction target by 2050 to meet their professional duties: bvajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1...
