A new model sheds light on why Jupiter has multiple polar vortices, whereas Saturn has only one. The pattern depends on the sequence in which system energy encounters three physical variables, as energy cascades from small to planetary scales. In PNAS: https://ow.ly/RHFZ50Y1Mli

New AMS Statement: Dismantling NSF’s National Center for Atmospheric Research would weaken U.S. leadership in weather, water, and climate science, putting public safety at risk.

For more than 60 years, NSF NCAR has improved forecasts and early warnings that save lives. More: https://bit.ly/4q6eChn

Unbelievable. This would be a terrible blow to American science, writ large. It would decimate not only climate research, but also the kind of weather, wildfire, and disaster research that has underpinned half a century of progress in prediction, early warning, and increased resilience.

It is hard to overstate how critical @ncar-ucar.bsky.social is to climate science in the US and around the world. It's the beating heart of our field. Generations of scientists have trained there, and almost everyone I know relies on deep collaborations with NCAR scientists. It's end is unthinkable.

β€˜This is censorship.’ Conference requires abstracts to comply with Trump anti-DEI order NASA-funded planetary science institute previously scrubbed hundreds of records from its archive

New from me for @science.org: A major planetary science conference will require submitted abstracts to comply with Trump's anti-DEI executive orders.

This conference, LPSC, is a big deal. It's been running since 1970 and is one of the biggest planetary science conferences out there. πŸ§ͺπŸ”

How Climate Scientists Saw the Future Before It Arrived | Quanta Magazine Over the past 60 years, scientists have largely succeeded in building a computer model of Earth to see what the future holds. One of the most ambitious projects humankind has ever undertaken has now…

In the 1960s and 70s, Syukuro Manabe pioneered ways to model Earth’s atmosphere. In 2021, he received the Nobel Prize in Physics for this work, which is often cited as foundational to modern climate science.

Figure depicting the minimal seeds and laminarizing trajectories for a few points in the turbulent region of state space.

Excited to share a new preprint with Michael Graham on identifying efficient routes to laminarization in turbulent flows. In this work, consider the question: What is the closest point to a turbulent attractor that laminarizes without a chaotic transient? (1/3)

Radiation is a key piece of climate models, but comes with a trade-off: use an accurate scheme (which is difficult to understand), or a simple scheme (which is not very accurate)...

Today, President Trump signed a bill into law that will eliminate $1.1B of federal funding for public media. This devastating act tipped the threat against journalism in America into a crisis.
