To protect that belief, evidence of harm gets minimized, denied, or deflected. Identity itself becomes evidence of innocence. If “we” cannot be guilty, then wrongdoing can only belong to “them.”
But there is another force that can lead to or amplify the same sort of violence: moral immunity. Moral immunity is the belief that one's own people are inherently incapable of the kinds of harm all humans have always been capable of.
History teaches something uncomfortable: no nation, movement, or people is exempt from the full spectrum of human behavior, including horrific violence.
Much hatred that fuels violence, such as antisemitism, racism, and Islamophobia, dehumanizes openly. That is easy to see.
