Brave new world for me today as I start doing supply. No work today so I enjoyed a snowy school run, did some much needed house sorting, batch cooked some lunch and read a book. Can’t complain!

Tomorrow I will be teaching. History. Interesting times abound!

Another shameless plug for myself in case anyone had a last minute staffing bombshell as they broke up for Christmas.

Don’t suppose anyone needs an English teacher somewhere within a commutable distance from Chester…

Thank you. I’ve always got shortlisted before now but this past couple of months trying to secure something for January, not even that. I might drop you a message if that’s ok.

A teaching and retention crisis and yet I, with 14 years teaching experience and more than a decade of TLR posts, cannot even get shortlisted for jobs. What gives?

He looked dreadful this series! And started to irritate me too. Possibly the two are connected.

Remember when we all came over here and were like β€œwow. This is nice!” Well that’s what teaching in a sixth form is like. It’s just so bloody civilised.

A bonus day off for me to cover childcare for an inset day, so I’m being bankrupt by my eldest doing all the things we can’t usually do with a 2 year old in tow.

Of course it does! And when you’re not prepared for it, it can really sting. Plus the comments you’ve had today must make you feel quite forgotten about. It’s just rubbish.

It’s rough, and people can be so insensitive and thoughtless. Scan pictures appearing without warning on social media or in group WhatsApps used to really send me spiralling. It’s the moments you’re not prepared for that are really tough. I’m so sorry you’re having to go through this.

Bags are packed, lunches are made and overnight oats are in the fridge. Rest assured, this level of organisation won’t last to the end of the week let alone the half term!

Totally embracing the start of September by making my own pumpkin spice latte in a pumpkin mug. πŸπŸŽƒ

My role until Christmas is in a sixth form college so I started the term this week. It’s been fascinating seeing how the enrolment process works, not least because I’ve been able to hear about what students study on so many other courses.

I have a feeling I have the tragedy ones. I’ll dig them out for you over the weekend if you want to send me your email address.

Hey #TeamEnglish and #Edusky, has anyone collated a list of past questions for AQA A Level Litb (tragedy and political protest)? If so, I'd love it if someone would be willing to share as it would be a massive time-saver! πŸ™

That targeted precisely the cohorts that would have picked English for A Level 10 years ago. So many of these students really believed that STEM was the best for their life chances and so that was the path they were choosing. We need to be competitive alongside that narrative. Somehow.

This is a huge factor in my experience. I coveted a form having an assembly once which was on STEM and it made me realise how strong the narrative on the brilliance of this area was in my school. There was a TLR for leading on it which meant regular assemblies, clubs launching rockets, trips…

I tweeted about this earlier this week, but I literally got shown them as a resource that I could use if appointed when at interview. This May.

I’m not saying I’m ready to embrace Autumn or anything, but I do seem to be looking up pumpkin spice latte recipes. πŸŽƒπŸ‚

I exam marked this year and I found the pressure to meet quotas really at odds with the need to take my time and apply the mark scheme properly. Or as properly as you can ever apply something so nebulous… I just couldn’t go fast enough. It’s a real issue.

One night away and I am utterly addicted the Love is Blind Sweden. I’m heading home to parent my children now so I’ll have to go cold turkey for some hours. The audacity!

I used to enjoy running along (by which I mean down. Never up) Bishops’ Avenue and ogling the houses along there.

Imagine being the person putting forward that suggestion. I bet it was someone who’d had to have breakfast with their headteacher the morning before their physics exam.

Oh my lord! That must have been such a weird situation for everyone. Did you have to have dinner with them?! πŸ˜‚

This happened to one of my friends and I get this story out every year, but I’ve started to doubt that this really could have happened. I’m glad I didn’t imagine it. I’m sure he had an invigilator at his house.

Yes! That’s what made me wary of the river. πŸ˜‚ I loved almost all of that book aside from the very end when the fig tree had romantic feelings and I just couldn’t deal with that. Some of the description in it was gorgeous though.

Oh I love books with multiple stories that come together. I’m putting this on my list. I almost bought myself the new Elif Shafak book because that does similar, but I have a horrible feeling the river is going to be a narrator and that might give me the rage.

Day 7 of our staycation means I get 24 hours entirely to myself. I’m taking myself to Liverpool for a spa, my book and time to binge the new episodes of Emily in Paris. Bliss!

It is a funny story to tell, but it has actually caused my career quite a few issues. The people peddling this stuff in their schools are the people making decisions about staffing appointments. I turn up with my research based answers on marking and differentiation and I’m not getting appointed!

I’ve sat through CPD on this within the last 12 months! And De Bono’s thinking hats were proudly paraded as a resource I would have access to were I appointed when at an interview in the spring term of this year.
