Oh NOOOOO
So this is just .... a stereotype? BOO
Oh yes. The scammers! I forgot about them.
What's funny (annoying) is that the "starving artist" trope also exists. So are we rolling in cash or are we starving? Are we all merely pretending to starve? Make it make sense.
Why do people keep believing this?! How does this happen?! Where is the source?! How can we defeat this evil?!
Every single year we talk about this and every single year people are surprised!
Who keeps telling aspiring writers that established writers make tons of money? Where are these liars spawning from? Can we get the CIA on this?

I read a section from Yellowface in class. One of my students said the protagonist sounded like a teenager, and was surprised to learn the character was in their 20s.
So I'm now wondering, what do you look for when estimating a character's age (if it isn't explicitly mentioned)?
Yes, but mainly for illness or education.
I've always wanted to apply to a writer-in-residence position in another city, but my (very stable) day job prevents me. It remains a dream, but hopefully one day!
I wake up alive every day. I cannot collapse and wait to be consumed. The struggle is learning what to prioritize. The serenity prayer on repeat.
As I enter my thirties, I've found myself with a different kind of anxiety. Eveything is so expensive, and there's so many things I want to save for.
That annoying question, "Where do you see yourself in 10 years?" is starting to feel more and more pressing.
Our Hamilton Verse interview!! β€οΈ
Amal is among the most insightful, incisive and interesting writers of our generation!
This is day 1 of begging @torbooks.bsky.social or someone to pay @amalelmohtar.com to write/collect a book of essays, criticism and/or interviews, please please! π₯ΉππΎ
I love to going to book launches where it's so abundantly clear that the author is deeply loved by everyone in the room π₯Ή

Weβre thrilled to see #IrynTushabe, @teresempierre.bsky.social, and #PhillipDwightMorgan featured in CBC Booksβs 3 Black Canadian Writers to Watch in 2026. Congrats to all three on this well-deserved recognition. Weβre especially proud to celebrate Terese and Phillip as alumni of our MFA program.
With the caveat that there are much more important things in need of financial support in our fucked up times, the support page for the Ignytes is back up for the 2026 cycle.

Shoutout to the random Catholic school student I saw on the subway with ashes on her forehead

There was a deposit in my bank account that I couldn't place. Then I remembered I registered for the Public Lending Right program!
Thank you to everyone who requested "Myth" at their library, to the libraries who added it to their catalogs, and to those who borrowed it.
Thank you, thank you! π₯Ήβ€οΈ
I'm sorry these bajan frogs won't let you sleep!!
(For the record, I am not an introvert and I usually like small talk. However on this evening I wanted to be invisible, like the wind)
Y'all are so valid for that
I just did a thing that introverts do (wait until my neighbor leaves the parking lot before I take out the garbage so I don't have to do small talk)
1. I KNEW you would find this lmao
2. A synopsis is a useful step tho! I think it's better than what I am doing (Googling)
